Good evening guys,
i'm very new to photography and jus borrowed an old lens from a relative.
i'm looking to buy a Nikon D40, but not sure whether can the lens mount onto the d40 or not,,,

the lens is Nikkor AF 70-320mm
1:4-5:6

any advise?
tks~

hmmm...but there got write AF leh...

Can mount but no AF.

To make it simple for you, look for AFS on any Nikon lens, and HSM on Sigma if you want autofocusing.

so if i get d60 instead...there will be autofocus ?

no. the d40,d40x and d60 has no built in motor. only d80, and older models like d50,d70,d70s,d200 etc will be able to focus

oic...so i guess i will have to make do with manual focus...anywayz its a good thing eh?
hehe... =)

some people love manual focus, some people would appreciate the AF. depends on you. sometimes when im bored, i would just use MF , but at times when i need some fast action or dont wanna miss out on anything, i would use the AF.

the D40/D40x/d60 are good cameras. all cameras are good, its just how the users make full use of it. if you dont mind 2nd hand, a d50 is good too. size is almost similiar to the d40/d60 with built in motor. despite its age, its still a wonderful camera. Im still using it :)

if im not wrong, a d50 kit 2nd hand is around $600 +/-

so would it be betta for me to get a 1st hand D40 or a 2nd hand D50?
i'm just a beginner...

cannot answer for you.. depends on your interest level and needs.. your budget.. for compatibility will suggest the d50.. it's a fine camera for its age..

but if you want to just start shooting.. can consider the d40 with an affordable kit lens.. maybe the 18-55mm..

I second tat, I am a newbie myself and I just got myself a D50 2nd-hand with kit lens at $550. It wasnt a calculated decision initially, just got the offer fr forum then just bought it on instinct. Then found it that it's the only beginner level cam fr nikon tat has a wider support of compatible lenses compared to the other beginner level cams i.e. D40, x, D60. I'm loving every bit of it now!!

Cheers,
ah tiow

hi ahtiow, glad you are loving the d50! its a good camera no doubt. i love it as its light to bring along and the 5 point focus VS 3 point that the d40/40x has :)

TS , you should get based on your needs :)

haha
i also instinctively and impulsively bought a 2nd-hand D50 TODAY!!...from VR-Zone forum.
comes with kit lenses, 1GB SD Card and a dry box...
now its time for me to learn the ropes!

it a wise choice actually.

 Consider getting a SB-800, as the pop up flash is not good enough, and if you use the 18-200mm, the extended lens will block the flash. That is if u do flash photography.

i just borrowed a Nikon SS-80 from my fren...haben really use it though...i guess i wun be needing a flash anytime soon but then again who noes?
haha
in the meantime i'll jus go around shooting and learning ba...
