D60 vs 450D

Which should I go for? I intend to get the Tamron 17-50 mm f/2.8 or the 24-75 mm f/2.8

My sonsiderations:
Cash flow - if I were to buy the 450D, I would have to wait for 2-3 more months, compared to 1-2 months for D60.
What are the pros and cons of D60 vs 450D?


I know it's yet another Nikon vs Canon debate, but I did a search on D60 vs 450D, and didn't find anything worthwhile. Thoughts?

These are the key advantages over the D60

Yes, the D60 might be cheaper to buy now but I've seen a few people selling their new D60s because of its compatibility issues with non AF-S lenses and upgrading to D80.

However, if you're looking for a simple to use dSLR and you don't bother much about the aforementioned features and certain Nikkor lenses compatibility issues then you won't go wrong choosing the D60 either.

hmm... since no one replying let me try to help.

firstly, are you new to photography? have you any investment into either system?

abilities of the cameras, just like D80 vs 400D, D300 vs 40D, etc. are not very different. by the time one outgrows either of these cameras (if you are new to photography) they will actually be already outdated. technology waits for no man these days. if you don't have investment in either then both are fine. the range of lenses available will also keep you satisfied for years to come. usually, you get what you pay for. that means that if it is more expensive, there's probably a reason.

let me just say that i only used a canon dslr briefly - i'm a nikon user. yet i won't tell you to buy nikon or canon straight away. think most people here would only have considerable experience in one camera maker's products, unless of course they are very rich. so asking most of us will give you an inaccurate answer.

try to read both reviews from dpreview.com. this should give you some insights as to what are the specs, strengths and weaknesses, etc.

but my best advice is that you should you go down to both showrooms (nikon is at fuji xerox, canon at vivocity) and ask to try the camera. i think most of the people here buy the camera that they are most comfortable with - in terms of grip, easy to reach functions, menu hierarchy. i think these are quite important because you'll be accessing these constantly.

for example:
1. is the camera comfortable in your hands? imagine holding it for long periods of time - will it cause you any problems?
2. then try adjusting stuff like aperture and shutter speed, iso, WB, focus mode, etc. is it easy to do so? you will be doing such things on a regular basis so you must like the way that it is adjusted.
3. how about the menu system, do you need to press the buttons several times to get into some basic shooting modes?
4. look into the viewfinder, how do you find it? do you want it bigger? brighter?

think the most important is that you must feel good with the way the camera is/works. that way you will shoot often enough that your returns on investment is justified.

side note I: the D60 can only use AF-S lenses, will this be a concern?
side note II: have you considered the other non-major brands like pentax, olympus, etc? they may be cheaper (if cost is your concern) but yet still can be rather good.

my consideration last time was
D80, 40D, 450D
but ended up getting 40D
cos price really drop alot and now is the gd time to get
D80 have overexposure issue
(correct me if i m wrong)
450D as the 1 st choice at first
but after i go youtube and search for 40D vs 450D, i watch the video, i decide to get 40D

gd luck to ur pondering, i ponder for 1 mth before getting my 40D

The 9 point AF seems a big draw to me, and actually if the 450D was around the same price range as the D60, I'll not hesitate to get the 450D.
About usage, I did shoot with my sister's 400D before, and my friends' D40x as event coverage, I didnt have much of an issue with both. I guess I should go down to the showrooms and have a look see.
I do think that the problem of only AF-S lenses on nikon will be a problem for me, so thats also a consideration.
Lastly, my dad has a old canon SLR, while my sis is using a 400D, though overseas. Thats another consideration.

since your family is mostly canons then is better you stick with the same brand, who knows maybe one of these days you could be sharing lens with your sis or dad.
so effectively D60 is out of the question since the lens issue is a problem to you.
looks like 450D is your prefered cam.

That's true, but I can't wait to start shooting! That's why I'm considering the D60, and whether it's worth going to Nikon.

Just try out the cameras because, I kinda tried both the cameras and 450D was definitely more to my liking and as everyone has stated the lens may be a mojor issue. Also, 450D has better specs. If you are concerned with the price i suggest to you waiting for awhile more till the PC SHOW and i really think that the price should drop slightly. So yea at least i still got a long way to decide i got at least 6 more months, cos of exams so yup that's all that i can tell you. The D60 may be cheaper but... i still think that the 450D will be a better choice

Did hear about about Nikon bodies from D80 and downwards cannot meter properly with non-AF, non-confirm chip lenses like those full-manual CZ and Leica lenses ? :dunno:

Would somebody be able to verify on that ? :dunno:

From my experience, Nikon D60 has very accurate metering. And talking about function, many users did not discover the "shortcut" button to the ISO,Self-timer,etc functions. If u scan through the manual carefully,u would realise that it is really easy to operate, and Nikon is more user friendly compared to canon in my opinion. However,u got to ask yourself, do you really need a 3inch LCD screen, do u really need live view, do you really need 12MP? cos all this are adding to the cost of canon 450D, as DSLR have always been operating on viewfinder basis, and a 2.5inch LCD screen is sufficient. Until recently live view have come in,but through experiments,live view is not really as accurate as the viewfinder.

But the choice is your at the end of the day,keep smiling!

err no. PC Show usually has higher prices. the vendors sell at teh RRP during the show. what you shd do is to wait for the show, BUT buy from shops like John 3:16, cathay, alan, op, etc. they shd give u the pc show freebies with lower prices.

Looking at your statement above, I think you have already decided that Canon is the preferred option and you are just looking for a reason to go with Nikon. I suggest you go with your gut feel. You want to go out and take great photos with your camera when you get it and i dont think the enjoyment should be marred by pondering if you should have chosen the Canon instead of the Nikon

Esp if there is already a 400D in the family, why get a 450D?

Hey i had the same dilemma last month when i was getting my first dslr. got a 450d in the end. main reason for me was that the d60 didn't have a autofocus motor, so you have to manually focus if you want to use primes and other lens without inbuilt motor. Don't think there's a lot of difference between nikon and canon in terms of lens...but i do think that if u are considering the d60, might as well save the money and get the d40 and spend the money on lens and accessories. oh skopio's right, gotta go down the shop to handle the camera and see how it feels, very important.
