400d doesnt comes with split/microprsim focusing screen. can you be sure that the focus is correct using the original screen? no.
with ef/efs lens, when you do manual focusing, there is a af confirmation led inside the view finder. but you dont get that when using non ef/efs lens with adapter.
so either you get a split/microprsm focusing screen (difficult to see in low light condition) or adapter with af chip (easier between the 2 methods).

My advice is to sell off the lenses and get their canon equivalent. Less hassle for all, especially yourself.
Yup my opinion is if you have a huge collection of Nikon lenses or u got some exotic/sentimental/expensive lenses ( which in any case will make ppl wonder why u switch camera system ) it is easier to just use canon lenses along with all the other AF / electronic capabilities of the lenses.

I think that should be more logical. Wondered why TS got a Canon when he already has a Nikon system in the first place.
I'm in the same situation as TS. Still have dad's old Nikon F-801 35mm film with Nikon 35-70mm and sigma 28-105mm. I want to ask how much the Nikon-to-EOS AF adapter costs (does it work like a teleconverter where you stack the nikon lens over the adapter, onto the cam?)
...or should I sell off my old Nikon kit and get some returns? Not sure bout this, cos it's like 20 years old.
I got a Canon because almost all photographers in my social circle has a Canon, which means more share-ability.

Maybe you should unless you want it for keepsake or decide to switch back to Nikon later.. ;p But that's not a lot of investment, so you don't lose or gain much anyway.
That's good enough a reason to choose an alternate brand.

Would it work for 1980 era nikon lenses? I'm not sure if Nikon changed their mounts along the way, and I don't know what mount (AIS?) my lenses are.
Nikon has not changed mount. You can still use AiS lenses on today's Nikon DSLRs (minus some functions on certain bodies).
