Hey fellow CSers! I need some general advice on prescription eyewear.

I'm looking specifically for sunglasses with a sports frame and prescription lenses (sunglass lenses with degrees). They shouldn't be too expensive (Oakleys is just overkill to me ><), but still *look* nice.

Any idea how I should go about this search? I'm pretty new to this: I've only recently started to wear my no-degree $15 sunglasses out, and I find it hard because I'm a spectacle wearer (~200 degrees). Nowadays when I shoot outdoors in bright light, I'll put on that cheap pair of sunglasses, and adjust my camera diopter, but then I'll have to look through the viewfinder to actually see things clearly, and it's starting to bug me.

Can anybody recommend me a good brand with nice-looking sports models and a good optician? Looking to buy these 'prescription sunglasses' for less than S$200, so Oakleys is out of question =X.

Please help alright?

Cheers~

i think its hard to get for under $200.

you may wanna try rodalink.

urm... oakleys are nice ~ a good pair can last you quite a while..

anyway, you may want to drop by the shop to look rather than ask opinions, after, it would be you who will need to see if the sunglasses fit..

yeah i remember last year standard chartered marathon race expo they were promoting their new showcase of sunglasses which range from 90+ onwards and all can have degree inserts.

goodluck!

I don't feel good about putting plastic onto my eyeballs, and I doubt my parents would ever want me to that for now heh. I look better with specs la..

I still like Oakleys or Uvex though. What if I up the budget to about 300?

It gets scary the first time, after awhile no prob le. :)

You can consider rudy project. Quite a reputable brand with cyclists and others.

You can go to queensway shopping center, the place with lots of shoes. They have many shops there making such eyewears

For lenses, can get custom prescription Hoya shades, various colours and 2 versions available. i don't know their technical names but one version looks like a GND filter and the other a ND:bsmilie: . Can get it custom-made at most optical shops. I got severe astigmatism and short sightedness, the prescription shades only cost me slightly above $100. I believe yours should be much cheaper.

As for the frame, it can cost anything from $10 to a few hundred dollars depending on brand and design. For my case, I do a lot of water sports, I don't expect to use my sunglasses for long, so I go for a $20 cheap frame.

Oakley is STILL OUT at $300. The lens has to be comparable to the money you pay for that expensive frame. and also depend on which design. The last time I wanted to make a pair of Oakley with perscription glasses that is multi coated and shaped to fit the Oakley, I was quoted about $800. for a pair.

As for long last where Oakley is concern. Try dropping a pair and step on it or roll your bike tire over it. Game over. Oakley last just as long or short as another pair...it is really how you use it. ANd if you can't break a pair...you are not playing hard enough heheheheh....

Get a Oakley if you can afford it and also you need one that is comfortable for you. If you are using it for sports....a very narrow small frame is nice looking on you but for sport that is not going to give you an all round view like say an Oakley Radar or M Jacket compared to say an Oakley Square Wire. But if by sport you are just using it to look sporty and just want to shoot with your camera and work your finger hehehe..then the Oakley Sqaure Wire for example is fine.

Buy first for comfort ... only consider something more exotic if you have the cash to go for comfort and killer style. It's serious money to throw at a pair. I scrapped my first pair when I bomb down hill on my moutain bike and it left my face when I jack my bike. It was totally toast where the lens are concern and it also snapped the frame. gone in just 3 months of use heh.. I trashed 6 pairs thus far and wear out just as many more. If you want to get something like that with your hard earned money...be prepare for this if it is used for really active sport. But for just shooting pictures...it should be fine. Personally I don't like to use sunglasses when I shoot. It just gets in my way completely and irritates the hell out of me. So I usually jack my sunglasses on the top of my head and then peep into the view finder...it is alot easier that way for me. Also all my sunglasses are very dark or mirrors so peeping into a viewfinder will seem very dark...hard to adjust my eye to the interior through the sunglasses. But that is just me...for active sport it is fine. That's my view

Ah ok. Thanks for all the replies guys!

Rudy Project *looks* nice, and they should be comfortable I guess. What would be a reasonable not-too-ex budget for a nice pair of Rudies with degree-lenses?

I'm ok with shooting with sunglasses, just that I can't see well with them and have to constantly adjust my diopter.

Cheers~

But if you have already ajusted your diopter to the power of your eyesight's degree you should not have a problem wat. Unless you are sharing a camera and shooting with someone at the same time heheh... my right eye is 250 so I already set my camera to fit it so no need to wear my glasses to peep into the viewfinder.

Rudy Project is good but I don;t think they have any with degree unless you can find someone to shape the perscription glass to the same shape...that goes for Killer Loops too...well the more fancy cycling ones lah heheh...those are my two other favorite glasses too heh.

Yes, that works, but then there's another problem. I'll have to look through and AF on things before I can see them clearly.. and practically speaking, that's quite stupid =/. Sure it works, but that doesn't mean I should do it haha..

I'll go check out some optician stores around my area. Anyone has recommendations for opticians in the North East?

Cheers~

pays to have a relative who is an optician.. (not works in the shop.. but owns the shop)
