No offense but you sounded like storing your wines?! Frankly, for lenses, it doesn't matter so long you don't stack your lenses one on top of another. Hope this clarify your doubt.

I would store large lens horizontally as not to have dust settling on the lens ( within the lens ) ..
If you take a lot of landscape pics, I advise you to store it horizontally. I used to store my lenses vertically, but somehow I realised it affected my horizons whenever I wanted to take landscape pics.
Similarly, portrait lenses must be stored vertically.

Here's a tip (that I learned from the hard way).
If you got a dry cab, flip the metal shelves upside down, then there'll be an "inner lip" which will prevent your lenses from rolling or sliding off. :thumbsup:
How do you know its only because of the storage that affects the alignment of your lens?
