I've borrow The Digital SLR Handbook by Michael Freeman from the library but found that bulk of the book is touching on Photoshop usage. As a newbie, I would like to further understand how to take better photos rather than how to edit and all. May you please recommend some books and if its directed at Canon users, all the more better. Thanks.

i think, the best way to understand how to take better photographs is not to read any guide book.. most guide books impart technicalities
what you need to do, is to borrow photobooks with whatever genre you're interested in.. for example, if you like landscapes, just borrow a whole load of landscape photograph books, and spend an entire afternoon pouring through. not just an enjoyable experience, i do feel you learn a lot as well..of course if you don't just doze off while looking at it.. if you do, then i suspect you should try another genre, the interest is not there.
at the very least, it should give you some composition ideas.. how to carry out composition, what looks better for you, what doesn't..

They do have description on what shutter speed they use, aperture, lens etc. Are they directly related to DSLR or do I need to do some step down calculation? If there's a calculation, any specific formula? Thanks again.

not really, as sometimes the dslr iso speed is not exact
what you should just know is how to use your camera's metering system, and what each trait you can change does, i.e. shutter speed, aperture, iso.. and shoot
after a while you will ujnderstand
take into acct the US/CA/UK pricing on the back (49.99/59.99/29.99) of the book, it seems to be a real good buy .. i even went back to borders to confirm that i didnt see the prices wrongly (got the borders card .. 10%) .. lucky i dropped my wife at city hall and decided to take a look at the shop..
Most contemporary books I've seen are little more than collections of photoshop screenshots with a few annotations, and topics are usually condensed into a double-page spread to cater to short attention spans - glitzy, but little substance. If you're interested in more solid, in-depth information, I would suggest to not overlook older books from the film era - e.g. Andreas Feininger's books come to mind. While most are not in print any more, there are lots of very inexpensive copies on the second hand market.

I'm a little cheappo on books at this moment, been going to the library to borrow and the bulk of it are on film. I would say the film photographers gives more 'bang' in their books. - Status
