It's about the equipment - Stupid

Again, refer my 1st message in this thread. Not trying to deny equipment is important but to make your equipment work for you, you first have to know how to use it well and make it work to your advantage. Otherwise, its useless thinking time and again, better stuff can make you better. That's the truth. It hurts but its still the truth.

Yes Yes Yes, I believe alot of people knows that. The biggest and final point is, CONTEXT, and not just simply answer almost everything with that statement + full stop.

"Which lens is better for portraiture?"
Ans- Its not the equipment, its the man behind which matters.(Full STOP)

"Which lens is better, 85 f1.8 or 85 f1.4?"
Ans- Its not the equipment, its the man behind which matters.(Full STOP)

"Which camera produce the best straight out-of-cam jpegs?
Ans- Its not the equipment, its the man behind which matters.(Full STOP)

Well, for me, That's BITCHING. It really hurts cause its simply IRRITATING BITCHING.

A textbook example of somebody experiencing great difficulties coming to terms with the truth....

and if you are not too reading everything out of context(funny you should mention that), you'd find that at no point of time did I ever said equipment is not important...

i got a fren showed off to me how great his camera is... especially it is so expensive. And he shot great stuffs, overseas scenic landscapes, etc.
But end of the day nothing fantastic. I can shoot the same thing using a prosumer which is so much cheaper.

It is just like using Dual core processor + 4GB ram just to surf net.

but mr hanako, whilst its something for you to gloat over, remember that one has the right to choose what he/she wants to use anyways.

unless you believe in a pseudo communism.. i.e. omfg!! everyone should use only prosumers!!!

having used a prosumer for many years and its still working, i've better confidence on a DSLR anyways.

Bottom line is, learning how to make the most of what you can afford is the most important. If you can afford a good camera body, by all means!

those people who ride bicycle all day may love their bikes and think that other forms of transport isnt worth it, hey, all these devices can get you from point A to point B, why do you need to have a car! and why a lexus? or a merc? you dont go a high speed anyways, not even long road trips.. whats the comfort for???

at this rate everyone should either be a cyclist or driving a picanto/cherry QQ. and all that nay-sayers should be put into a cherry QQ at 130km/h on the NS-highway just to feel that "drift"

seriously its psychological..

when a prosumer user gets a good picture on his cam, and a dslr user fails miserably, the prosumer will say : "NOOOB!! using so expensive equipment still screw up.. go back and learn your basics lahhh etc etc etc" - a sense of self actualization, perhaps achievement no?

and when a DSLR user does what a prosumer user cant do he will go "LOL wtf.. look at how these prosumers fail miserably at doing this particular scene.. dam noobs, time for them to realize what a DSLR is for" - some sense of achievement/actualization again?

and when a DSLR user vs a DSLR user, one has a bigger faster and more expensive lens than the other : in his mind he will think "WAH.. song boh.. my glass is bigger... fap fap.. " - sense of esteem... ? even when both probably are amateurs..

when BRAND A, a cheaper brand with lots of functions can take some stuff in comparable to a more expensive higher end Brand.. user of brand A will go : "ZZZZZ what a waste of $$$ you dont even need that expensive camera.. even i can do better with my Brand A".... Brand B user will go : " zZZ not interested in that plasticky piece of thingey, doesnt feel good, so hard to resell, performance so so only.. etc etc"..

when a retired professional photog takes picture of his new batam meimei with a PNS camera, he will be thinking.. argh dang it do you really even need that big DSLR to take pictures with a "feel" in it... i can do so with a tiny PNS...

so many different situations, so many different forms of "satisfactions" available to people, thats why photography is a hobby, not only on pictures, but on equips too.

For me, the bigger question is: Why are we even debating about this?

These are all just opinions, lah. Take it easy, people.

Haa... not really debating, I think this is a healthy discussion, as long as no one starts name-calling, pushing their points over the top.;)

Fantastic, good, bad, or lousy pics all boils down to individuals. As some had mentioned before, does a good or maybe fantastic pics got to have all the regular photograpy rules appiled to it i.e. correct exposure, sharp, rules of 3rd composition blah blah blah?

Holga, pin hole or lomo pics sucks or artistic?

Fact of life: They are many kinds of people out there. Financially endowed, artistically gifted, business minded...etc... but the bottomline is any equipment that helps pays the bill and put food on the table is good equipment. Can we all agree on this?

To those who want to 'upgrade' your equipment go right ahead. There is no law against that idea. You won't be hanged for making that purchase (except when your other better half founds out you maxed out the credit card). You might actually help the already gloomy economy. LOL! When you feel shiok, it could be the adrenalin pumping into your spine. Just make sure your body has stocked a lot of endorphin when post your pictures for everyone to see.

But I do like to voice out this another fact of life to some of the uninformed artistically endowed people. Its not about the subject but who you know that matters.

Have a good day!

Equiptment=important? Reminds me of chairman mao's analogy..."black cat or white cat, when it catches a rat, it's a GOOD cat!" Haha...don't flamme me, juz thinking whether the logic can be applied here...

Whatever it is people, PEACE, and happy shooting...

the right equipment in the hands of the right person makes wonders. the right equipment in the hands of the wrong person speels disaster. so its a combination of both man and machine...

i agree with you for the first 2. those are valid questions.

but for the third, while certainly it is a matter of equipment, why do people bother with jpgs altogether? it definitely reflects a certain amount of laziness and unwillingness to pp. and we all know that while you CAN get good pictures without having to pp at all.. certainly pp can only add to the picture when done tastefully.

that said, the response is quite idiotic, and doesn't address the issue.

but you are using examples which are rare. in fact, usually in such threads, based on my massive post count (and thereby, thread viewing) i can tell you that such threads normally get very happy responses by people who are more than willing to share.

you usually get the equipment < photographer response when people ask questions like:

1) which is better? nikon model xxx or canon model equivalent xxx?
2) help! somebody, i need a new camera, i am not satisfied with my nikon d3
3) ditto for 2, replace with canon d mark iii
4) i have (insert long list of lenses, every range, got zoom, got whatever), but i still cannot get the results i want.. what lens/body should i buy?
5) i cannot get the color i want out of camera, will this lens, or this body help me do it, even though the lighting conditions at that time sark and i don't really understand what photography is about, but i need an excuse to buy more equipment?

you get the idea. i think it will not serve any purpose if you insist on presenting examples that support only your point of view and act that you are on a crusade to vindicate equipment coveters/hoarders.

This is a nice example how that "bitching" phrase is used as a non-insulting version of "the question is utterly stupid".

"If you're hungry, is Indian food or Chinese food better?"
"What's better, a blue car or a red car?"
"What perfume has the best smell out-of-the-bottle?"
"Is it darker indoors or at night?"

Do such questions deserve a good answer? (Do they HAVE a good answer?) Be grateful that someone at least is kind enough to "bitch" and try to teach you something, rather than simply ignoring stupidity.

:bsmilie:

the funniest one is still the one i saw when i first joined cs

"how come when i turn on flash at night, shenton way still looks so dark!"

Obviously your questions don't deserve any answer at all.

Well, One-liner posers are grateful that their "Teaching" helps gain more posts count.

Shoot jpegs = laziness??
