Is photography for pple who are rich and old?

Maybe I am stereotyping, but most of the photographers are either middle age men and above, and they are wealthy enough to purchase good dslr and lenses. Young folks like me can hardly afford a good dslr to learn photography.

this is definitely a stereotype. I think there are a lot more young people into photographey these days cos photography has gone almost 100% digital these days. It's very convenient compared to films. And cameras are getting more automatic and are smarter than those in the last century. Even girls and pri/secondary school kids are into it.

As for the cost... Yes, in the past, a good basic SLR camera can be gotten for $400-$500. The cheapest DSLR these days are in the low $1000 or slightly less. But the prices have dropped a lot in recent years.

Don't listen or be concerned in some of the posts here regarding people who talk about expensive lenses and all that. You can appreciate DSLR photography with a minimal spending of less than $1500. If money is still tight, I suggest you either save up or try getting a 2nd hand one which can be gotten for less than $1k.

But undeniably, as your skills and expectations go up, you might want to spend a lot more on better cams and lenses. Photography in general is not a cheap hobby. But only if you are a seasoned enthusiast or equipment collector. Otherwise, just buy a cheap setup and it can lasts you for many years.

Nooooo it's now the world of young but indebt (too many zero interest purchase) or debtless (read as deep pocketed parents).

An average Dslr would allow you to practice and learn. Even a consumer point and shoot allows you to learn. There is very little by way of entry bar to learning photography save your own inertia.

yah you can buy my second hand 20D with kit lens for only $650... so cheap.... and it still works like a charm. And it has what most DSLR have now, good for learning and experimenting.

i can oni tell u one thing...guys hobbies are usually very expensive:sweatsm:..when we get into it..we work hard and willing to pay for it..this does not only cover photography..

p.s: i'm not a sexist..i dun mean photography is for guys oni..more and more gals are turning to expensive hobbies as well..

Wad is ur definition of 'good' SLR?

Canon EOS 33v is good.
Nikon FM2 is good.

Canon 300D is good.
Nikon D40x is good.

U don't have to own a 1DsMkIII to say that is a good camera.

I bought my first film camera by delivering sugarcane to the stalls with my bicycle.

Then delivered newspapers in the morning on foot to buy films.

And sold roti in pasar malam to buy lens.
