Strangest encounter today

That might have been me. My friend mistook a fellow photographer's 70-200 f/2.8L IS for a water bottle.

Encounter this problem a few month ago when shooting my ger at Singapore History Museum. The sercuity told me that i need to paid to do photo shoot inside SHM, which is S$107 including GST. :sweat:

At the meantime, there are a group of tourist happily snapping away without been stop.

Makes you wonder sometimes. Is the bias limited to photographer with big cameras, or LOCAL photographers with big cameras.

I am singaporean and sometimes I really feel ashamed or ponder at the stupidity that exists in us collectively as citizens.

1. I mean, DSLR = you're pro, compact = you're a snapshot amateur?! :bigeyes::bsmilie:

2. People who queue endlessly or rush like crazy for something as long as publicity is made known (think Hello Kitty toys offered by Mc's that culminated in shattered glasses and ugly squabbles. What are the ugly looking cheapo dolls worth now anway?)

3. Hordes of people who get cheated BIG on Get-rich-quick scams which are so clearly impossible to be true.

4. Apparently calling ourselves "citizens with good hearts" by donating large sums of money to dubious charitable organizations and foreigners we totally dun know who impersonate as monks and handicaps. And they all turn out to be bogus! Time and again, people still won't stop to donate and say: Never mind.... (That to me is not "good hearted". It is stupidity.)

But when it comes to simple things like helping our own people (which costs nothing!!!), like giving up seats for the needy on public transport, or opening doors and giving way to aligning passengers, we won't do!

5. Bright yellow lines drawn on the MRT grounds for us to learn how to queue, like kindergarten kids. (Never once have seen any such lines in subway stations in the major cities I travel to while overseas.) Yet still, many singahpoleans everyday are blind to the lines! Fwah...

7. Teenagers from top schools standing near the MRT doors in a packed train who fail to move out first to let passengers get out before going back in. They prefer to stand rooted near the door and make passengers squeeze through. Maybe their science teacher forgot to tell them their bodies are made of solid, not gases!

8. And many more...

WRT 5., just last sunday, I was alighting from the train at Redhill MRT, when this father and 5-year-old-looking-son were gonna board at my door. The father clearly had no idea what the lines were for, as he led his son to the center of the bloody doorway while waiting for the train to halt completely and for the doors to open.

Now you know where the bad habits stem from. Look, it bloody doesn't make a difference whether you stand in the center or not. Either way you still have to wait for everyone to alight before you board. Oh yes, it does make some sort of difference - you become a major annoyance to every alighting passenger.

t's already been proven time and again that there's some sort of bias against locals. I believe the reasoning is that tourists (bring in marnie) are allowed whereas local can do harm of some sort ???

Easiest thing to do is such circumstances is take a photo of the tourists snapping away like crazy, and lodge a very diplomatic but questioning letter to the ST forums/STOMP etc. Might as well send a copy to the PMO's as well.

There's a clear reasoning behind observations made here, and IIRC it was identified a loooong time ago by our MM: Unfortunately, ours is a society that understands only two things; punishment and reward.

OK, I won't go into sociological and psychological issues, which would eventually lead to political ones, but the 'obvious' is fairly clear for the more observant to see.

It's true. You can only do your part to make Singapore a better place. There are, and will always be, people out there who can't be the least bothered.

All I can say is do your part. What other people do, you have no control over - sure you can teach them, but they will only change as much as they are willing to learn. This willingness comes with humility - another attribute that is sorely missing in society today.

Back to your original topic, it is also applied that there will be people who try to change the perceived image of anyone being a pro photog just because they have a big camera, but as many as there are, there are an equal number of people who are just too comfortable to place a "blanket ban" on anyone with a SLR as being a professional photographer and not allow them to photograph their event...

I think we place too much value on human lives. I have always said and it seem to be getting more truer then I giving it credit for... Human Being are nothing more then a "virus with shoes". Travel out into outer space and look down and you can see clearly what we are doing to this piece rock we call planet earth. It looks no better then what a science student staring into a microscope would see...that is a virus attacking a living tissue.

The good news in my view is that if global warming does happen and we are the one that caused it...we will all be worm food and mother earth will heal itself and restart life again. Let's see then what the primodial soup will evolve next...I hope it would be something better then us. hehe.

Anyone listen to standup comedy? There is this standup comedian call Bill Engvall in the USA. He is famous of a trademark humour in which about stupid people. He would quote something really stupid someone would remark to him and then he would come out with a cheeky rebuttal and then he makes this imaginary gesture of pass to you a signboard which say "stupid person" something for you to wear around your neck so that people will know to avoid you or not bother to ask you to so more "difficult" task. heheh. That is just how I feel each day I see someone stupid but then again..another part of me makes me feel better. For each stupid person I come across I am thankful I am not them and I will survive better then them even if I am older. I feel that there is less competition for anything I want. heheh.

i do it the other way round.. when i use to take the MRT.. for all those morons that do not allow me to alight.. i take a single step out and with arms crossed, i stay put (if i am alighting alone). if not, i walk with my right elbow pointing forward..

it aint easy pushing past someone who weighs about 90kg, and has determination not to be pushed back..

what happen next? i think sooner or later i'll encounter this....

I told the guard that i'm just shooting at my gf, but he said because i'm using a DSLR and a lightmeter so i need to purchase a permit or stop shooting.

I just packup my gear and go to fort canning to continue my shot, no point arguing to idiot and spoil my day.
