To me anyways.

First off, please let me say this is NOT meant to be another 'What rights do photographers have' kinda thread, so please try not to make it one.

I was shopping with my relatives at Orchard and outside Paragon, there was a nice 'mini open lounge' set-up by Citibank for their cardholders with a small stage for a live jazz band. We were allowed in for a free drink and I took casual snaps of my folks getting a drink.

Next moment, a babe informs me (very nicely), that professional photographs are not allowed.

I was like 'HUH'? I said I was only taking family snapshots, and showed prior shots on my DSLR, typical family snaps I took with the same folks throughout the day, but she apologised and said that photography by professionals were not allowed.

I just smiled and asked, 'what makes me a pro?'

She replied, 'Your big camera. You look like a professional'.

I was like double :eek:! I truly didn't know whether to laugh or cry at that moment.

So I asked, 'does using a big camera make me a professional?'

She very diplomatically replied, 'Yes. And even if I allowed you to take photos, the (or my, said babe pointing in the general direction of the shopping center entrance) security will come and ask you to stop'.

I was like ... 'ok, no problems.'

I then took out my PnS and asked if my 'non-professional' camara can or not, and she actually looked relieved and said can.

I just found it profoundly amusing, the whole perception thing about people using DSLRs being a 'professional' photographer! I usually expect that at family gatherings from older gen aunties and uncles who grew up in the 60s, but from a well-spoken young babe and a progressive and dynamic (read: non Cheena) organisation to have that perception is somewhat bewildering to me, really. There was absolutely nothing about the decor (there was none anyway) or presentation to worry about copyrights or another business copying their layout.

Still shakes head in disbelief with bewildered smile on face as I recount all this.

Just to be very clear, they were very very nice and courteous, we enjoyed the drink and the jazz performance was really quite good, all things considered

yes

the most lethal combo is dslr + tripod

that one is gone case, no one will believe anything you say :(

well, at least there will be larger sensors in compacts in the future, eventually :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

that camera, dream merchant

it turns you into ultraman

after the first time you use it,

you can do this

ultraman120607.jpg

people will welcome you into their restaurants and invite you to take photos of them and offer you free food

Got big camera, got small camera too, definitely some pro at work. :bsmilie:

Time to get the Sigma (from the US or Japan of course).

I guess her mentioning "professional", means you are being paid to do the job.

Can just imagine if a casual CS outing at that place......and EVERYONE brings out their "big" camera... XD

I think the organisers and security all PENGZ! :bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

hunks will worship you

the only downside is that sometimes people who use big warehouses as cameras will turn into monsters and they will challenge you to see whose flash is better, whose image quality is better.. and they are scary, some of them have damn good built-in flash

but no worries, in the end, your mega flash will pwn all of them and you will be THE PHOTOGRAPHER

NOOOOOOooooo! Please say it isn't so!

:bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

I can understand how a lay man see things that they are not familiar.....for example when I see you guys going for NS.....I always think you guys can fight like John Rambo if needed....as for my self....I don't even know how to load a bullet or aim properly....so that's is intimidating

:bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

when you are extremely professional

you can use expensive lenses as beer mugs

on another note, soon the squirrels will be denied entry into restaurants too.. at the rate they are going, they will learn how to use telephoto lenses soon

I always thought that unfound fears or perceptions and mass hysteria stemmed from the dark ages where there was surely a 'god' to explain every single perception or occurance in life and when anything went wrong or against 'common logic and acceptance', mobs made all sorts of sacrifices, including human sacrifices in an attempt to 'appease the gods'.

That may have sounded a bit harsh (and definitely not directed at you GK), but from the younger gen, and from a progressive and dynamic organisation? :dunno:

Shakes head...

It's good to see that there are still stupic people born everyday....and worst get into career position high enough to think up such rules and the best part get others to follow their instruction..without questions. I guess we are also still making more new "Drones" too. Okay maybe polite ones....but drones all the same. heheheheh....

Hey those are nice picture of the "pros" with their big cameras heheheh

I was told my a friend that SLR (digital or otherwise) is not allowed into Old Trafford by spectators during match days.

So, even the ang mor have same rules.

DT :)

I believe people are 'made into', conditioned and trained to be a certain way. I don't think they are birthed as such unless it's a genetic anomaly. :)

I never blame a problem child; I look at the parents or guardians and educators.
