D60 or 400D

ive been saving to buy my first DSLR,come to IT show and my option goes to these 2 cam

Nikon D60 kit AF-S VR 18-55 f3.5-5.6 ED @ $1188

Canon 400D Kit EF-s 18-55 @ $1199

nikon got VR lens kit but on the other hand nikon dont have depth of field preview.

my other consideration is which lens that cost more?nikon or canon?

Do take note that the D60 has no in-built AF motor. Yes, it might not be a big problem but be prepared to do Manual Focus if you don't want to buy AF-S lenses (Lenses with Autofocus motors in-built). There is a list of Nikkor lens prices, do look there to have an rough idea about the costs of AF-S lenses.

Also, D60 has 3-point AF metering compared to the 400D's 9-point metering.

Do try out the two cameras if you can as both offer different grips. It is important that you are comfortable with holding the camera.

Agreed, Sony's A series if you are looking for a value for money body.

Radawi, do read up different reviews as well to get a better idea of what you have in mind.

Well since the IT show is here, it's the best time to squeeeeeeeeze and try to get a hands-on with the cameras you are considering.

hi bro, you can try both camera's on hand and compare them which feels you better... honestly though i am a nikon user but i don't recommend a half cook nikon dSLR such as D60. if you really are interested in photography and want more room to explore without the limitations on lenses then based on your budget get the 400d instead or wait for 450d.

no problem sorry if i sound rude earlier.. if to choose between D60 and 400D, u are better off with the 400D...it might look cheaper in built and feel than D60....in reality it is actually much usable ..and from the bundle offer.... i well worth it even it lack the vr lens.

Very indivdual. Well, you could argue it is not the gear. Personally I find that the physical feel of the camera is very important. No doubts I have came across many great shots taken with Canon cameras but in the end I still chose Nikon.

@radawi, I'm a newbie too with A100 and enjoying every bit of it...though A700 is my wishlist..haha..
well you can go back and try the A200 or A350 (with built-in Steadshot/VR/IS) then compare again with others then buy what u like...as others said..only u can define what u like.
As for the lens...hmmn...the alphabros are getting bigger each day and there are ppl here and there selling lens...btw, Minolta lens (A mount) can be use in Sony Alphas..which are all VR/IS enable..hehe...

thanks for the comment,he D60 half cook that mean there will be a much much better improvement on the upcoming product,as for the waiting for 450D im not quite impress with the spec,bigger lcd but same resolution as the 400D. 12M pixel and 10M pixel?live view?i think ill pass 450D

one useful feature of the D60 over the 400D is the in-camera retouch feature which, among other things, enables you to correct white balance of the image in-camera after you have taken the shot, particularly if the camera's AWB is not too accurate or if you forgot to preset the WB properly before shooting. all it takes is a few seconds of adjusting the RGB histograms (so that they are similar in shape) in the filters->color balance menu.

the kit lens of the D60 is also more useful than the kit lens of the 400D because of the VR feature which will enable you to handhold your camera at low shutter speeds (3 stops effectiveness), very useful in dim ambient lighting conditions when flash is not permitted.

the *biggest* disadvantage of the D60 is the inability to AF with AF lenses without a built in motor (e.g. non-AFS nikon lenses), which severely limits your choice of lenses for the camera.

yes i read about the ability to correct the white balance,but since i never use DSLR im not quite sure whether i will use the feature or not?but we can still edit it on pc right?

im thinking just to buy the 400D body and buy the extended warranty that come with EF-50 F1.8

as for the "3stop effectiveness" im not sure how it really work?and any canon lens that have such feature?

I'd recommend 400D cause it has most of the features only recently launched in the Nikon D60 plus more like the 9-point AF system compared to the paltry 3-point in the D60. CMOS sensor vs CCD sensor technology. One thing I like about the D60 though is the wider grip

Looking at just the prices, the 400D is a very good buy for a feature pack camera. The D60 is still a very basic camera, and the lens options are limited and usually more expensive nikkor models, and the in camera post processing features matters little if you pp on the desktop.

Nikon body is more ergonomic for many users though. I do not think users should be worried about the lens support of the D40/60 range though as long as you know what ur lens upgrade path will be in the future. There're a good number of inexpensive fast glass from third party manufacturers and more to come due to the huge popularity of these budget cams.

Still if u follow the market leader ie Canon, there's little to worry about as they offer a fantastic range.

But if u don't like the feel of the 400D, i suggest looking at sony or olympus. You can't really find bad dslr these days.

first of all, what you think you will shoot mostly?
second, 400D can say a bit old cam liao, why not wait for 450D? or maybe add a little more money and get the 40D instead?
for nikon, i'am not very sure about it. but i will chose D80 for sure. even if cost me a little more.
then sony.:lovegrin: do you know about the SSS? thinks you can go try A200, but suggest you get the A350 instead. the A350 has live view that said is the best compared to other. (live view was work with a second sensor in the body, where other brands shoot and live view are using one sensor.) it's got iso3200 and more MP compared to others model you mention. and it's brand new cam with singapore being the first in world to sell. lastly, sony alpha is growing strong and fast, thinks you will not regret.:bsmilie: haha sorry say so much.

next will be the lens
