HSBC Women Championship - no camera allowed

Just read about the no Big telephoto lens for F1. But in this HSBC Women Championship that finished yesterday, it was no camera at all.

I can understand that no flash allowed, but no camera? Or video for that matter. Well, SLR or dSLR does make some clicking noise, that might affect the concentration of the golfers. But at something like 20m away, I am wondering if the shutter noise could be heard in an open field. This is especially so at the Tanah Merah CC, which is like less than 300m away from the runway, with planes landing and taking off from both runways. Actually, with any plane moving, you can fire off your shutter GPMG style and no one could hear the noise at all.

BTW, anyone knows if there is any comparison of shutter noise among the popular dSLR?

Tiger Woods' caddie once threw the camera of a photographer into the water because his camera click disturbed Tiger's concentration during a crucial putt and caused him to get 2nd place instead of 1st, thereby causing the caddie a huge loss in earnings for that tournament.

What do you think? Some people felt he should have thrown the idiot into the water too.

You can say that was just one irresponsible amateur photographer, but all it takes is just one idiot to get the golfers and caddies very angry. What if the whole field was lined with DSLR's clicking away?

usually there will be signs asking people to off their handphones. Even the jingle of coins/keys in the pocket are frown upon.

Golf does take quite a bit of concentration, and I actually saw distractions that really irritates and eventually affect the golfers. Ochoa was disturbed by a woman sneezing behind me, and the woman just laughed away. Another golfer actually banged her club on the green after someone clicked the shutter an instant before she completed the swing.

The difference in an inch is a birdie or par. The golfers were already very accessible to the spectators as many were within an arms length of the top golfers as they begin their tee off.
Respect them in return by allowing them to play at their highest potential.

That's is the problem with our so call 1st world status and 3rd world mentality.....thing like this not only happens in golf course.....there are some treat Natioal library as child playground....Cinema like a karaoke lounge....and MRT like their personal limosine.....anything that is not ban or fine is consider alright :dunno:

these players are the top professionals in their game and it is a joy, an honor, a privilege to see them. if you guys simply cannot respect them and have nothing better to do than complain about rules which are pretty much common sense, i suggest you should have played with the children in the kiddie section of the event and take photos there.

this will never stop, and sad to say there are always going to be idiots who have nothing better to do than complain for no other purpose than to satisfy their own selfish needs or to make stupid comments.

this was a great event, you guys have not seen the press releases i have seen that are going out all over the world. you guys have not seen the statements from players that are incredibly impressed. you guys did not interview and sit down with these players who had nothing but the most highest of praises for singapore and you, all of you... yet these are the comments some choose to make.

some comments from players were "this tournament is one of the top five of all the LPGA events." other comments were "this tournament is even better than two of our majors." that my friends is a HUGE statement. i can go on, but they held singapore in such high regard that it is nothing but sheer stupidity from some of you to remark the way you have. it's a shame, really a shame how something so great for the country and such a major event has to justify its rules to a few idiots.

anyways, i think it would be better served to have locals tell these boneheads that they are clueless instead of a FT so i won't comment here anymore. hats off to the nation. i spoke to a lot of people there and you guys really did make an impressive showing to the other journalists and media from all over the world. :thumbsup:

Ultimately, it will be good if everyone respect others if you wish for them to respect you too.

There must be a reasons for every rules and regulations, if you don't like just don't get involved in it instead of complaining. Well, I think it should be the same for those photography competitions on copyright issues.

Put it this way lah. If they dont want me as a spectator, then I also do not want them lah. Simple as that. I dont find that interesting, and especially with so much restriction and the danger or the ball landing on my head, I rather not see. I switch to another channel when news playing sports and they are featuring golf.

What I dont understand is some spectator just want to see because these guys making $$$$$$$ just by putting small white ball into holes. :dunno:
Some go because the flock goes there, no difference with the queue building up for free tissue paper.

Anyway all the aura build around golfing is like it is atas sport, not for peole to play and enjoy but play and get stressed. Take up so much space for a few elite while cannot build more mass sport venues like soccer. The advertisement also are atas one lah. So simple. I also dont buy what they advertise. :sticktong

I do agree on this. These top players are already sweating it out by trying to remain focused amidst all the distractions (i.e. planes flying off, rain etc). The last thing (however insignificant) is for the onlookers to distract them further with their silly cameras, etc.

I'm not a golfer, but somehow I feel that only those that are playing the sport itself can really appreciate & understand how these distractions irritate the h*ll out of them during play.

And while I was watching the live telecast, I think I saw someone with a DSLR (and a short lens) taking photos during tee off... :|

Lots of athletes of all sports do this. I mean, has anyone ever been to a sideline of a NBA, World Cup or NFL game? The noise from 150 000 to 200 000 spectators is terrific, I don't see those athletes whining and crying over spectator noise. In F1 and Moto GP racing, a moments lapse in concentration can kill the driver, I don't see the drivers whining that the cars or the spectators are too loud. And all those sports require tremendous amounts of concentration too. Guess it must be a golf thing, and that's why I much rather be watching sports with the unwashed masses and screaming my lungs out than supporting a sport "deep with tradition."

Well said. Being a golfer and also enjoying some photography, i would have loved to be able to take photos of these great players but since it was "STRICTLY PROHIBITED", jst had to control :angel:

Respect the conditions that golfers have been playing under for the past elephant hundred years. I am no golfer but I believe it calls for a different concentration compared to other sports that are noisier. If you, or anyone else for that matter, cannot respect/adhere to the conditions, then just don't support or spectate. No one is stopping you.

In F1 and MotoGP, the noise is accepted as part of the conditions that the athlete competes under. You definitely cannot say "I don't want engine noise".

Look at Tennis. Supporters are allowed to cheer their hearts out, at the right time. When the players are about to serve, there is a disciplined silence.
