Is nikon D40 All that good? better than D80

Hi, all

found this site with the newbie tutorial/ guides on this corner.. the owner just cannot stress enough of the good of nikon D40.. over D40X, D80 or D60 and so on.. just need some confirmation over this here.. since many forum member here actually prefers D80 or the upcoming 450D of canon

anyone could advise.. since i am looking into getting my 1st DSLR, dun mind of the D40 6MP..

well, it all really depends on the user.
i am a newbie too and even if i own one of the best camera in the world, i might not take the best photos.

personally, look at what are your current/future requirements. 6mp is fine for most desktop publications but a higher mp would be really handy for cropping.

the only downside for the D40 is that there aint many AFS lenses you can use. even if there is, they are really expensive.

In terms of "Worst to best":

D40 > D40X > D60 > D80

Then again, many cameras from Sony, Pentax and Olympus are better than those.

Rashkae is right to stress that camera buyers should also do their own research. The internet is full of websites dedicated to camera and camera comparisons. Even if you cannot understand the technical jargon of such sites, one can still can look at the reference images and judge for themselves which is better, or which is more appealing to their eyes.

There is this one website you can go to to compare reference image samples of different cameras http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM

Just input Camera A and Camera B and images will come out for each respective camera. Click on the image and the image will enlarge for you to do a detail comparison.

DPreview is another such site. Dont just look at the specs and the pictures of the camera. Go to the part that matters - Photographic Tests & Compared TO Sections. Read also the Conclusion section of the Reviewers.

dun worry.. I may not be well that lazy.. and my research is still on... (only again.. its like saying why do you need a doctor consultation or even seeing doctor.. while there are so many phD reference out there for you to reference whenever you are sick. or perhaps you could do your own operation next time i bet? .. joking.. )

only issue is for the 4 models you specified, only D40 could flash sync at 1/500 including of your much claimed D80 is only at 1/200.. which some reviews says its not that good for night shoots.. what do you think?

Hi, Zero, I have been dpreview regulars, so thanks for the pointers. i am doing much of those.. problem is every net dictionary (review, the site owner.. etc) is different while explaining the same thing... do you think by own research alone will we get the best results..

while try my best to be my own doctor.. i do believe on 2nd opinion equally important.. and are the reasons i post here.. (taking off time from the net review and reference instead.. )

Why do you need a flash sync of 1/500 for a night shot? Most people who do a long-exposure night shot would never even use a flash.

Hi Burgerlim, good that you are reading up. Each review is different, but i would think that most reviews will give a thumbs up for both the D40 and D80. Asking for 2nd opinion from users and fellow CS members is a smart thing to do :thumbsup:. All the best with your decision on which camera to get.

AF lens are hard to come by for D40/D40x.
Rare, and expensive.
You gotta have the patience to practice and practice with manual focus and then determine the sharpest picture through the 1' viewfinder.

The pixel count IMO is not that important
The other factors like your budget, can you handle a heavier camera, will you need anything more than the kit lens and do you need all the functions of the D80

All these you need to answer yourself and decide.

I decided that the extra weight of the D80 was ok, and i liked the 18-200VR and the better build of the D80.
Its your call mate.

my question to you is are you willing to MF ?do you have the $$ for newer lenses to AF on the d40/d40x ? if you have the $$ , by all means go with the d40 series. if not, go for the d80, there are lots of good lenses nikon and non nikon that would AF on the d80 (not unless tehre is no CPU on the lens , or if the cpu spoils haha)

i own a d40, and while it does take great pics, i don't think it's better than the d80, because the d80 can AF (with more AF sensors) with a *much* wider range of nikon lenses, and is 10mp which allows greater flexibility in cropping. the d40 may also be too small for some users. i bought the d40 for its compact size and lower price, but may replace it with a d80 to AF with the non AF-S nikon AF lenses.

agree.. with all.. SLR is more of a system then a just a camera. Frankly after much reading.... i am more over to the D80 / canon 400D / canon 450D with leaning toward nikon... (this is a classics newbie question.. with tons of information on the net)... knowing D80 kit is of a more complete while many claim 400D kit lense is not so great and suggest to get 3rd party lense with body only.

its not just a system. its not just the BBB virus (buy buy buy) its not just equipment.

to me, my camera is like my life. not because of money making, i dont make a single cent out of it, but because i believe, everything that i upgrade or get, is like having new friends.

each lens has its limitations, each body has its own differences. the body has to go well with some lens, like friends, not everyone can be your best friend, not everyone can mix well, then its you also, the photographer, how well you can "click" with your friends, in this theory, how well you can shoot/compose/control the situation to capture that image.

think hard what you wanna get . every camera system has their own legendary lenses. the trinity lenses as what they most call it , as it covers the 3 main points, wide angle, mid range to telephoto.

but they costs a bomb. you get your first trinity lens, what next ? 2nd one ? what next? 3rd one ? what next ? what next? ALways a question , always a never ending BBB virus. what should yhou do? for starters, know what you want! what you shoot. ask yourselves, does getting it justify what you need ? (not want) this will eliminate the possibilities for an itch to buy. of course, the tempation is there, or you can always buy then sell it off.

a lot of people said that 3rd party lenses dont perform as well as the original. depends on yourself, and what you determine as sharp, brilliant and perfect. different people think it differently.
