Next year’s Malaysian Grand Prix is edging closer to becoming Formula 1’s second night race after the Sepang circuit confirmed it was in discussions about securing a floodlighting system.

The Sepang circuit outlined its aim to follow the lead of Singapore and stage its 2009 grand prix at night last month, with such a move being encouraged by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone so that some of the flyaway races can be broadcast at a more convenient time in Europe.

And Sepang’s plans seem to be moving forwards, with its chairman Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir revealing that the circuit is in the process of securing a bespoke lighting system.
"We are studying and looking for the best system as there is no one single lighting technology that can fit all tracks,” he told Malaysia’s New Straits Times newspaper.

“The system must be custom made for the Sepang circuit.

"We are now in discussion with companies which offer such [a] system.”
Mokhzani also hopes that the purchase of a permanent lighting system will bring further benefits to the circuit outside of F1.

"We have also studied the impact of having lighting technology at the circuit and we have come to the conclusion that it will help generate bigger revenue as the circuit can be rented for night racing," he added.

What's that old adage again? Monkey see, Monkey do :bsmilie:

comon... you cannot just pass this comment... the monkey see, monkey do also applies to SG. i think Msia had the ferris wheel first before the SG's Flyer.

I suppose Gunbucker sure said it in jest and not in all seriousness. :D

the "monkey see, monkey do..." is done everywhere...

MRT, Esplanade, Singapore Flyer, IR are all clones of something that has already been done elsewhere in the world.

If Malaysia hosts the 2009 F1 race at night, I would sure go to watch the race LIVE. The tickets are reasonably priced, the infrastructure is not bad, at least lot of money has been spent in building a beautiful circuit. I would certainly contribute towards that.

I concur, although the first night race is held here in Singapore, the prices are quite steep when compared to Malaysia.

Datuk should have known the bulan in Malaysia is so much brighter than there is no need to spend so much of rayaak's sweat money for an expensive lighting system.

If bulan is not enough the eco-friendly coconut oil lampu can also brighten the circuit liao. :bsmilie:

One day, we might see the F1 host between SG n Malaysia by using the causeway. No need the F1 team travel 2 countries which just next to each other. For current F1, I rather watch at home as I don't want to ended up either with rain pouring on me or filled up with dust! :bsmilie:

Why such attitude?

If the organiser can afford, the more the merrier. More competition means more benefits for the consumer also.

Obviously, the word banter doesn't seem to ring a bell. Chill.

haha.. i suppose they can steal the market if they allow photography :p F1 in sg no photog.. gRrrRRR

to be frank, i think SG roads are not that suitable for F1 racing..

Was Malaysia's bold move to have F-1 first. A night race must have been one of the conditions F-1 set in place for SG to host a race.

Not that i'm a sadist or anything...just for the fun of talking *ock but won't that make the race even more exciting?

Can you imagine the drama if one of the cars somehow flipped into the spore river.

i guess they had barriers to cushion off any head-on crash ...

Racing in Singapore?? I thought that's illegal... won't they get fined for speeding?

actually sg is a bigger cat (being a lion) just that we usually copy, i mean adapt, from somewhere slightly farther than adjacent shores.
