Hey everyone! I'll be going with my secondary school concert band to Perth this June holidays for a 12 day concert / sight-seeing tour. As I'm the photography nut in the band, I'll be bringing all of my gear along with me to capture those fun filled moments.

This is gonna be a looooong post so please bare with me :) I'm trying to be as detailed as I can and address any issue k?

Alright, first up. The trip schedule will be quite tight (ie move out sharp at this time etc), with a few pockets of free time along the way. I'm thinking that a lot of time will be spent on coaches / buses where we leave all our musical instruments about. There will be performances / concerts, but since I'm already a senior, I can opt out of some performances and focus on photography instead.

Informal performances will be in open day-light, while the more formal ones will be in those low-ambient light concert settings.

I don't know much about the weather during the June period: Will it be cold? Will there be frequent storms and the like? What's the weather pattern in Western Australia in June?

Ok, onto the photography part--

The complete list of gear that I'll be bringing (some have not been purchased yet):

Optics:
Canon EOS 400D dSLR
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens w/ hood
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM w/ hood & tripod mount
Canon BG-E3 Battery Grip

Misc:
CF Cards (I have 2x2gb, I'll be shooting a lot, so recommend me a good total storage size please. We'll probably have laptops to transfer all the photos, but I feel like getting more just in case)
2xLit Battery
A whole lot of AA batteries (just in case I have to use the BG-E3 6xAA batt thing)
Giotto (or some other brand) wind blower
Spectacle cloths
Transfer cables
Canon Battery Charger

Support:
Bogen Manfrotto 190XPROB w/ 486RC2 Ball Head - Low-Light Concert shooting / Planned shooting / Group shots
Bogen-Manfrotto 681B Monopod - Take-with-me-when-sight-seeing thing.

Bag(s):
Lowepro Primus AW Backpack
Lowepro Stealth Reporter Bag (Do I need to bring 2?)

That's all I need to bring, photography wise right? Did I miss out anything?

So, if that's the case, what's the procedure like for transporting optics when flying? Different flights have different max weight-load for bring-aboard luggage right? So any suggestions on what I should do? The usual thing would be like.. tripod / monopod in hard-cover luggage bag, all optical equipment packed into Primus AW bag with me, and just board right? I want to shoot on board the airplane, so I'll try to get the window seat and stuff haha.

Ok, so other than that, are there any tips for traveling overseas? I mean we'll be on a pretty tight schedule, so I probably don't have time to think about what to shoot that much haha.

Thanks for staying with me so far =D I'd appreciate any tips and suggestions if you people have any.

Cheers!!

Well...
Exciting that you are going to Perth...
Good city for photography...
You MUST go to KING'S PARK - Get some city-skyline-shots with your group...
The ferry between Perth and Freemantle...
Rottnest Island...
You have to spend WEEKS in Perth to see it all...
Enjoy...

I'll answer the weather bit. Its going to be cold. June's winter here in Perth. Storms will vary. be prepared.

Oh ok. Thanks :) I'll try to get as many warm clothing as possible haha. How many layers of clothing? =X

But it was quite cool yesterday and today yeh? :)

June, winter, expect the weather to be around 17-22, and possibly a bit wet! :)

Do you know your itinerary, where you'll be staying etc?

Nah not yet, we'll know once the month draws closer.

Dang.. I'll have to bring along those big ziplocks to fight condensations. Rarrgh haha.

I need to know more about Singapore's & Australia's views on transporting optics. What's the standard procedure like for boarding / disembarking?

1 jacket should be fine.... When I lived in Perth, it reached like 2-3 degrees, only had a jacket and survived well :)

Dont u think bringing so much equipment migth be an overkill? Not to mention its freaking heavy too!

And yes, can be very wet :) When I was down in June 05, it rained for the entire week I was there! hahaha.

I've never had to worry about condensation... mmm! :)
Transporting optics? I say to carry it with you! :)

Nah I don't think it's really overkill. It's only about 3-4kg of lenses and body almost everywhere I go, plus a monopod and some clothes. I can handle all that haha. 17-200mm with some 20mm focal length loss suits me very well.

Oh man I hate rainy days haha, guess I'll just have to adapt xD

Suggest you bring lithium AAs in that case as they'll be very much lighter than alkalines & last longer too in case you need to use them. They perform better in te cold too. Just divide the total number of alkaline AAs you planned to bring by 3. :)

Anyone mentioned UWA ?

The oldest university in Western Australia - take a few shots of the winthrop hall and walk walk around the university , I am pretty sure you find some good shots there too.

Noted =) Sanyo Enelope batteries are lithium right? The white rechargeable ones.

I go here every day :D heee

Places I like for taking photographs include:
UWA
South Perth foreshore
Kings Park
Fremantle
Perth City
Cottesloe Beach
I like all those places along the river :D

Depends on what you want to be taking photographs of, and what time you'll be out :)

I will help u take all the photos while u concentrate on your bz schedule. :bsmilie:

Hmm.. 2nd to 14th June... Is that bad? Hahaha...
