Here's my take on it. Might not be what others would do but this has worked for me and the network I maintain for my various offices.

I use to use Norton and McAfee. I have not used Trend Micro but far as I know it is so-so.

As for Norton and McAfee...well let me put it this way. If you are running especially an older PC or have little ram...having either of these anti-virus program especially Norton will tunr your horse into a pig. It is a resource hog to say the least and will use up space and CPU cycles in the background while it "guard"your system.

Granted not one anti virus s/w is fully effective. Norton's latest incarnate (norton 360)is suppose to be a big improvement over the bloated ware it was (famous for) but it is still not small enough a foot print.

Sometimes finding the more dangerous virus or spam is more important which sw you use. AVG might have not caught something that Norton did but the one caught by Norton might be something very minor or vice visa. Long story short, there is no 100% cure. But you know what can make all the difference 100% of the time to prevent your computer from being infected and this is something I teach every one of my colleague in my offices. The weakest link in your PC's security is not the anti virus s/w and how often you update it. It the person sitting at the computer using it. YOU are the weakest link. There are many ways you can prevent this from happening and you can find many ideas as to what you should set up or do and you find you could almost use a PC without even having a anti virus s/w in your system. Trust me I know...I have done that for the longest time since I could not find anything good enough once I drop that damn Norton and McAfee. Then along came NOD32. If there ever was a anti virus s/w I could recommend to you. This is the one. It is cheap, you can buy it online or at SLS or Funan. The "footprint" is so small that it hardly effect your system's resources as it guard your system in the background. Best part..it updates itself everytime it needs to and it does it so quietly and tiny that you are not even aware of it till you see a small prompt that pops up in your bottom right hand corner that says your anti virus s/w NOD32 has been updated. How much more better then that? And personally I have been using this for almost 2 yrs. Arm with this and just learning to avoid certain behavour when you are confronted with email and websites..you find hardly any virus or spamware can get to you. Fool proof? But I am still waiting for mine to happen me after almost 2 yrs of using NOD32.

I personally think AVG is pretty good for what you pay for it ....which is FREE! hehe...as I said...it is also about you the use and how you use your PC. If you are not sure what behour you should adopt..let me know and write here...I am sure me and others would be able to give you some great pointers to protect your system. Really...your PC can be as safe as a MAC! heheheheheheheehehe

Having run AVG anti-virus free for more than a year and a half and having no problems, I'm a bit surprised that you've had some but as has been said, nothing is perfect.

I've usually recommended McAfee VirusScan at work and other places have used Norton Anti-Virus but neither of those has been 100 % reliable. I had to use hacker-like techniques to remove one virus that nothing would handle. Norton, as has been said, is a resource hog. It's also crashware, causing more problems than it fixes.

If you don't have a firewall or you're using Windows' standard firewall, I'd suggest the Comodo Firewall Pro version 3.0 to help keep problems out. It's as free as the AVG anti-virus. Also, if you're using Internet Exploder, stop using it and use Firefox or even Opera. Internet Exploder 6 is a virus-writer's paradise.

I use mac so usually don't care.

On my windows side, I will use AVG, its free and good!

Last time used Macafee quite satisfied, but not free =(

Norton CMI.

Norton + Spyware Doctor

+ once in a while Trojan Remover (shareware)

use these to (free) scan once in a while

SpyBot
Ad-aware

avast! anti virus.. freeware. couple with comodo firewall :thumbsup:

Avira AntiVir works for me. kinda ulu i guess, didnt like AVG's huge number of false positives on some of the downloads/webpages :dunno:
the personal edition is free ;)

Personally I don't use Antivirus(s), when there's a virus I'll just remove it manually. So far so good, never happen.
But when it comes to softwares, don't use Norton Antivirus. It screws up your system, esp when you're trying to uninstall, it either wont let you or won't uninstall clean on your system. Hogs up around 60% of more of your rams. Even heard Norton people themselves use Kapersky Antivirus. Bottom line, give it a miss. Users face this problem all the time, I know because I deal with it daily.
Just go for Avast. Free and simple.

I second sammy888's choice of NOD32. It occupies a small memory footprint and I am able to run a on-demand full-system scan while running a few other tasks without noticeable lag.

I agree with Sammy888...antivirus technology is ever changing, so are the viruses........I really am not surprise if they are outsourcing or sharing the same facilities to detect and develope the virus pattern file

It's very hard to benchmark the effectiveness of these software and most of the time we will base on hear say and mass feedback in forum like this......some say brand a is better than brand b, some say brand c....but the effectiveness of the software can only be felt after you actually get infected....Unless you are in an enterprise environment which you can affort to implement multi level protections with different vendors' solutions....even with that, they can only minimize the infection and not 100% eliminate....for home....we can only improvise on which ever we can affort and willing to pay.

For me, to minimize the chance of getting infection, I will get myself a reputable antivirus, all the above that you mentioned should work as they all have millions of subscribers using it every single minutes......make sure pattern files and programs are frequently updated.....install a firewall like zone alarm etc and make sure the policy and rules are reviewed frequently, these are the active protection.....on the passive site...refraint to visit unfamiliar website exspecially those "hot & spicy" materials.....file sharing like BT or emule are a no no to me.....for incoming emails, selectively open especially attachments...and finally....frequently backup your important stuffs in an offline media :D

Btw I am using Avast and Zone Alarm at home.....for speed and personal preference reason....and they are free

In my office...we are using MessaLabs for external emails....Trendmicro Enterprise solutions for all our desktop, servers and gateway :D

strongly recommend Kaspersky. very fast and effective against many spywares & virus not detected by Norton & the rest. check it out.

(ok, it is not free.... but good stuff don't come___)

cocoa

have been using Avira for 5 to 6 years already, very satisfied with its performance

Try Bitdefender. You can download the trial to see if it can detect the virus.

Actually it's best to have a combination of AV software. None are perfect.

Norton to me provides only the most basic level of protection. It's quite weak.

I stopped using norton because it was just too heavy and it was just like windows vista a pain in the xxx. Every 5 seconds asking you tyhis or that.

A friend recommended me AVG. I am using it for the office with full license paid. It happily works. No worries. Scans frequently and in the background. I can keep on working without any problems.

Got AVG at home too.

I recommend AVAST. It's a free software but only for Home use. Been using it for a few years now, from WindowsXP days till now on VISTA. IMHO I feel that that's its still up to the users' self discipline and basic maintenance to ensure a smooth operation of your computer :)

Norton viruscan 2008 has improve performance and smaller footprint.

Mcafee is also good. It really up to your preferences.

to summarize the posts above, all virus scanners sucks, all virus scanners rocks.

which is true, because corporate antivirus are the ones which works the way i want them to, not those gimmicky home-based scanners that trys to squeeze out money from new yearly editions.

if you can afford or have a company that uses corporate editions, go for it. otherwise, just print out this thread, take a dart, randomly throw it, and follow the post the darts hits.

Better edit this b4 stupid mods see this.:bsmilie:

really, mods should get a life.such is the pathethic state of the rules heere
