Your 1k budget is including all other extras??

Then you have a few choices of the older models like D50, D70 or D100 for Nikon and a new D40 is about $850 to 870.

Do consider about a dry cabinet (which may cost from below a hundred to a few hundreds, depending on type and size), cleaning kits, ext flash, tripods, etc...

you prob can consider a second hand Nikon D70s or canon 350D.

Have a look at the offers in buy/sell. I think you should be able to find something that fits your needs quite nicely.

Do remember to take into account other things like dry cab, memory cards and maybe a bag when doing up your budget.

You are in luck! At today's used prices, S$1K can get you a very nice DSLR. You can almost get an excellent Canon 30D or Nikon D80 body only, or a lesser 350D or D70 with kit lens.

Suggest you get a 2nd hand body with the extra money getting a better walk about lense. :D

You will probably want to consider the versatility of the camera and the ease of upgrading and finding lenses and other accessories in the future. If so, I would narrow down the choices down to the two big camps, N or C.

the 1K +- is just for the camera itself, got another buget for the misc stuffs.. so dont know which is better for starters like me..

thinkin of starting with a kit lens first, is kit lens really bad?

so whats a decent lens for starters? if i get a nikon or canon body.. whats the price range like for the lens?

For starter lens, if you decide on a 2nd hand D70s, go get with the kit lens ... it is good enuf. :)

If that's the case, then go with a D40 first. Practise more and you'll want to grab more lenses and upgrade the camera body later on.... ;)

You could get a brand new Canon EOS 400D body for $1050 and spent about 200 or so more on the new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens (a great lens for the price as the reviews state).

You may want to get a 2nd hand Canon EOS 20D with kit lens (18-55mm) will be about $800-$900 and start shooting.

I have both Canon 350D and 20D, Canon do not create them equally. I found 20D focusing is faster and more accurate, less noise at ISO1600 & 3200, 5fps help you to capture freeze the wonderful moment, body is very solid build. The picture quality take by the 20D with the same lens is better (compare with 350D). There are many photographer use 20D to take wonderful pictures. 20D will be able to meet most of the photographic requirements and cut down in upgrading to a better camera in a short future.

:)

Hmm if you want a new set, D40 will seem to be quite allright with the 18-55 lens. D80 kit also in 1.5k area so if you don't mind forking out a little more. For Second hand, there are quite a number of D70 and D70s and D80 floating around so you may be interested in them. Pairing them with a 18-70 or a 18-135 should be enough.
