Traffic - Vietnamese Style

This photo was actually taken last year, when i went overseas to Vietnam for holiday, and this is a typical urban scene in Ho Chi Minh City.

The traffic there was really impressive i would say. Nothing like this was ever seen in Singapore. :bsmilie: (well, at least at present.) Although they had traffic rules and regulations, but no one seems to care.

Used a slow shutter in attempt to capture the motion of the motorists at the cross junction, and i really like this photo since i feel that it captures the essence of urban Vietnam - criss-cross traffic.

Please C&C on the technique used (and composition maybe?). Thanks for viewing.


Some stats:
Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Focal Length: 17mm (on EF-S 17-85 IS USM)
Aperture: f/7.1
Shutter Speed: 1/15 sec.
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Compensation: +2/3 (since i used evaluative metering, and the sky is rather bright that day, i had to overexpose so that the foreground wouldn't be underexposed)

Now that it is lunch can spend a bit of time visiting clubsnap ....

I don't get the feeling of any main subject here. IMO photo is very "touristic" (if there is such word)

No....I don't think it's too touristy. From his write up, I would say that he had captured the essence of what traffice conditions is like in HCM city. The blurring of the motor bikes adds drama to the scene. Perhaps the TS might want to accentuate the woman in the center of the pic. I gathered this was his original focus.

actually, there isnt any particular focus. the main focus is the movement of traffic. much like a landscape.

Hi Bro,
The slow explosure is a good try
However, the bright sky is a bit distractive. As it's just plain white or grey, no texture and clouds, I would re-composite the frame and include less sky.
Next time get to the 2nd or 3rd floor and shoot from there with slow explosure, I believe you will get a perfect shoot

Yup,Vietnamese traffic is terrible.In fact if you want to cross the road there,forget about waiting for a clear spot,and they wont stop for you either.What u need to do is to look out for heavy viehicle(since they have a bigger blind spot) and cross the road one step at a time(ignoring the cars and motorbikes).The bikes will go around you so you dont have to worry.

In fact,if you go to District 1 where all the posh hotels are ,there's tourist police to help the tourists cross the road.:bsmilie:

PS:Im starting to bring the bad habit to singapore...hehe i dont bother waiting for Green Man at all,or not even crossing at designated points:bsmilie::bsmilie:

thanks for the gd suggestion. i agree that it would have been better if it was shot downwards frm a higher perspective. will take note of this, especially when taking an overview of traffic on the road.

actually, when i was crossing the roads in vietnam, i'll just keep walking slowly across and the motorbikes would just avoid you. i seldom see cars there. then when u cross, they'll start to horn at you. they are so used to horn at ppl and other motorbikes even for nth. :bsmilie:

the tourguide who was with us said: "if u want to cross the road, just close ur eyes and walk forward!" :bsmilie:
which is quite true for some ppl, cos when they see the chaotic traffic, they wouldnt't dare to even take a step forward.

Nice capture. Would be better if the woman biker is off centre as she seems to be the focal point. Would work well in b/w with high contrast IMHO. Try it and see how it goes!
