define: noob / newbie

noob / newbie is a technical term abound in cs. I did a one time search for definition of noob but didn't find it amongst the threads. anyone can enlighten me if there has already been a discussion of this? (maybe i should search more keywords)

what qualifies one from calling himself noob?

ha. i think possible terms to play with are
1. length of time engaged in photography
2. frequency of shooting during this time period
3. interest areas
4. self-learning or mentored
5. kit owned
6. relativity.

to elaborate a bit more on pt 6, i can be a noob compared to someone who's been shooting for 10 years. OR i'm a noob in macro but expert in street photography. ha

well, maybe the person is modest when he calls himself a noob? it's awkward to proclaim yourself as pro/skilled and later it turns out, most of the work produced is substandard?

Eg: those American Idol contestants.. claim to sing for 10 yrs, says their frens & family cry when they sing cause their voice were so beautiful etc.. and when they open their mouth on national tv.. we truly understand why they were actually crying...

Despite what the term seems to imply, "newbie" or "noob" in the context of Clubsnap has nothing to do with how long one has been into photography.

This is quite clearly evident by all the postings a la "I'm a noob": discussions are about topics, not the person posting a contribution. Irrespective of experience, it should be possible for anyone to post reasonably intelligent questions/answers/contributions. Each point stands on its own merits, and I would assume most people couldn't care less about the photographic CV of the person who wrote it.

Some rather experienced people seem to call themselves "noobs" to fish for compliments.

However, the main use of "noob" is to claim indemnity for not using one's brain:

"Should I clean my lens with a sledge hammer? I'm a noob, haha!"

"Why do my pictures turn out so dark when I leave the lenscap on? I'm a noob, haha!"

"Hi, newbie here, studying engineering at XYZ university. How do I solve a quadratic equation?"

And, a favorite:

"I'm a noob and don't know how to use my camera. Can anyone spend a considerable amount of time to explain to me in detail what any person of modest intelligence could figure out if they bothered to read the manual? Hahahaha."

oh i do think the claiming indemnity is a very valid point.

i have been shooting for a few years now and i really dun have a good portfolio or shown very big improvements, but i find it weird to call myself a noob. lousy portfolio means something has to be done.
