Pic was taken during a trip to Segamat. It was a hot & quiet day and I noticed this tyre shop with the workers were resting due to the fact there was no customers.

The pic may look cluttered but just want to show that the shop is well equiped and ready to serve customers if they ever come. However, I might have screwed up on the focus of the subject which is the workers.

I'm looking for C&C on the composition - did I getting the feeling correct as titled? Any other comment will be appreciated. Feel free to help out this newbie.

Data:
Konica Minolta Dynax 5D
Sigma 17-35mm F2.8-4
Focal length - 35mm
ISO - 100
Exposure speed - 1/500

Not bad...now complete attention is on the workers:thumbsup:

Chair is obstructing a key subject. Can't be saved.

The red and yellow and the lines are strong compositional elements but the subject is marred.

Don't think a change of angle will help also. You can only wait for another moment, if it comes at all, and if you have the time to wait.

I thought the original was good .... for the cropped version you will need to make a new caption like ... "taking a break" or something .... the crop version loses the meaning of the "slow day at work"

=)

My thoughts exactly.

I think there are many distraction around which was not apparent when I was taking the shot. Hopefully the nest time round I could reliase these factors and come up with better composition.

maybe you can use photoshop to do some effect to the background so the two guys can stand out better?

I hope I'm not commiting any infringements by posting multiple images in this thread, but I'm just trying to gather tips from comments and improve my photo. Anyway, I hope that the below is an improvement.

Hey, a meaningful photo you've got here. I'm a quite new too, but don't mind if I give my 2 cents? =)

The BnW has made the guys stand out alittle, how about adding color just to the door frame where the 2 guys are sitting? Because i feel that the colors from the guys are not outstanding enough, by 'framing' them up with the door frame (as it is contrasting), maybe it'll be better?

Maybe you could fiddle about the Photoshop and see which effect is suits your theme best. (;

Personally, find the staircases between the workers and the workshop an obstruction. If it doesn't exists I think the photo would suit your description very well, more of the workshop can also be shown. The relaxed mood of the workers is presented well though.

This effect definitely brings out the 2 workers~ Hmm, but would actually prefer to crop away the signboard and also the emptiness (another gate?) on the left to reduce the distraction.

You can also try out doing selective colour the other way round. Meaning, leave the bright colours of the gates there and "desaturate" the workers. Let the "office" maintain it's vibrance while using the relax feel shown by the workers to bring out the "slow".

Just my 1 dollar "Gim Dun"~;p

Another attempt to improve my shot. Gave a little more colour to the image and also to lead the viewer to the 'resting' men. Did not crop/remove the signage or the workshop away to allow viewer to get the idea the location and condition of the environment.

i prefer the full-color original since it tells a more complete story about 2 workers taking a break from their chores which involve 2 air hoses and 2 jacks. great catch!

just one thing to add: panning the cam a bit to the right will get rid of slanted beam on top and at the same time remove the space on the right of the workers.

Hi madmacs,

Thanks for your kind words. Didn't notice too much on the slanted beam.

The position you shot from. In my humble opinion it should have been shot flat-on... But this slight misalignment can easily be corrected in post-processing.. with some loss of edges...

I like the colours and the "old dirty" feel.. just like how workshops are. Heh.
