Who prefers an S5IS over a DSLR?

I own a 350D with a couple of lens, and also an S5, but the 350D sits at home while the latter accompanies me all of the time.

Reason?

I'd love to take movie clips on most occasions - something which you cannot with a DSLR. And the movies from the S5 are good enough for home DVDs. I can even zoom optically during movie recordings, and something which you just cannot do even with a normal compact.

I'd recently went to Bangkok for a holiday trip - the zoom range, IS and video features are just fantastic. Of course, the IQ is not as fantastic - IMO, terrible noise even at ISO200, but the versatility of the S5 just makes up for it.

Now, how many people out there think the same way?

Don't know why you use the trailer as an anology, because IMHO, it does not make any sense.

Versatility is what I'm trying to address, not capabilities. You are trying to compare a car to trailer? A car is much more versatile, IMO...you got it the other way round....no offence. The trailer should be the DSLR then.

Again, this really depends on what you want - a better picture taking machine as compared to an all-in-one? I'd prefer the latter and now I'm asking if anybody out there who thinks like me.

Try that yourself personally and I'll follow suit.

If you want to give suggestions, make sure you give one that don't embarrass yourself...no offence

I have both and honestly, i prefer to use my DSLR for general usage. My S5 IS is only for small gatherings and short photography shoots.

It's a 30 QD (film SLR). My DSLR is 10D.

Having a compact is great if you do not want to carry around so many lens on on oversea trip. The compact these days can do almost everything (movie, macro, wide, tele, etc) except for low noise at high ISO.

The S5IS has the best video recording features in a camera.
The recent announcement of compact camera with HD and Full HD capabilities has enable the existing camera to move to the next higher level. I believe more campact will be announce in the near furture with better video features.

Compact can be a backup or when you need a features that your existing lens that you are carrying is not able to do it (such as macro, movie, etc). It's light and convenient.

That's one main reason I got the D40x to share the same SD card with my compact. If not canon will be my choice.

I love to have a S5 anytime !! I used to have a S3 before moving on to DSLR.

The versitility of the PNS prosumer with video functions ( great video capability I must say ) is useful especially when the time demand that we shoot with voices and moving images. I think no pictures can replace candid moments flipping by where the sound gives the images more meaning.

I think a DSLR can function as a PNS quite easily too. If the user is not to fussy, I think a prosumer and a DSLR don't make a whole lot of difference to them. Let's not even venture over to prosumer, I think a high end canon IXUS series can do the job of producing colorful pictures very well too !!

However I think the S5 and a DLSR ( 350 ) are build with a different market segment in mind. Just like the intro of the live preview on 40D, who needs it if you are so use to peeping thru the viewfinder to shoot. Unless you are setting up the camera infront of the tree and there's no way to put your eyes inbetween the tree and the viewfinder, then maybe the live preview is great. Other than that, i think it's still a great to have feature. =P

You must have your DSLR 350 for something before laying your hands on the S5 and therefore you find the function of the movie recording alluring.

I love to bring my S3 to clubs and shoot where are DSLR will be too conspicuous and not allow. Only in these times do I wish I still have my S3 with me. Other wise, the DSLR unrestrictive and quick freedom for me to change setting is something I cannot have from a prosumer. I got use to making changes quickly with my DSLR and handing me back a prosumer, I find myself stifle and gave me a sense of nervousness of not having a complete control over the setting especially when I wanted to shot in a particular way at that moment. No amount of video function can save that either.

So would I prefer a S5 over a DSLR?

Yes I think I would but only as a play thing which I can pass around to my friends and not having to worry that they drop it or sit on it. =) Other wise, for an obsessively meticulous person like me, only a DSLR suffice. =)

I feel the same way too. I use my S5 99% of the time. Have a 350D as well, but i seldom use it as it is too bulky and heavy. Brought it a few times for holidays but with my girlfriend's shopping, I have way too much stuff to carry. Find having my S5 with me so much more convenient. Pictures are just as great for holiday photos. You can leave it by the beach and not worry abt it being stolen as you can just hide it under your towel or something. Use quite a lot of the video function as well. I guess the only time i use my 350D is when i go on outings with my photography friends.

Technology for compact cameras with 7.1M Pixels has really eaten into the DSLR market. Although not as flexible function wise, but convenience, size, weight all makes up for it.

haha. Hope so. I love my S5 IS, it literally sleeps right next to me when i sleep.
I have never been able to lay my hands on a DSLR so i cannot judge or lay my preference as of now.

S5 IS i feel is underrated even by my own dad. GRR. Cause he says its so amateurish, so small, donot have a lends hood and whatnots.

This thread can hopefully give me the motivation to just shove those silly contemplations bout buying a DSLR down the drain.

Seriously, lets form an S5 IS coalition. I'm always on the lookout of what my other S5ians do with their cams.

If I am going on vacation to relax, I will bring my S5IS together with my FujiFilm F31fd and gorillapod with me. There is no way I would bring my 40D with 17-55 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 IS on my holiday trip...

If S5 shutter is as fast as the DSLR for fast action shots,I'll just keep it as my only cam.
For S5 is a decently gd cam for landscape and portraits.
The rest leave it to Photoshop.

I think that if somebody possess more than one camera at a time, he tend to use only one and keep the others untouch. The more he use a camera, the more he keep familiar; the more he keep familiar, the more he tend to use it next time. Unleast he use two at a time (like wedding photographer). That thinking keep me from purchasing second camera body. Is it right? Anybody got experience!

I keep my prosumer as spare. Frankly, if you feel that you're using your proconsumer over your DSLR for shooting, that means you didn't buy enough lenses for your DSLR loh :bsmilie:
