Must it be dSLR?

I recall reading a very similar posting recently.....

I duno whether it must be a dSLR, but actually I think for pri sch photography club, having anything like a Canon S5IS is very very good already.

nowadays, the younger generation is so lucky... 10 years old primary school kid and will be getting a DSLR from daddy...

n i'm still using my canon A80....

Hi, I am a primary sch teacher (also at the Yew Tee area) and I'm somewhat involved with the school's AVA Club. At the primary school level, get a good compact. As some have mentioned, a Canon S5IS, or even a Canon Powershot A650IS.

IMO, a DSLR is too advanced for a primary 4 child. There's also the worry that the child may be spoiled and get the wrong impression that for good pics, must have good camera/DSLR.

Starting from a compact is good because of its limitations. The child will learn to work around the limitations and this alone will improve his/her skills. (And if you're really brave and/or serious, when he gets to sec sch, get him/her a film camera.)

Also, I don't think it's necessary for primary school students to own a DSLR. If need be, the school should provide such expensive equipment. (Nowadays, schools are given a huge budget and they've got a lot of money to buy stuff)

light...........small................. what about M8?:bsmilie:

just get D40 or X, cos next time if she ask you for a 600mm, at least you can use it too. it'll be a waste if she get's a canon, like that you cannot use her 600mm.

no need dslr, some compact with manual also can, 10 yr old better learn to compose first, no need complicated manual mode. they will have more fun that way. the teacher must be not knowing how to teach well if demand only dslr. no offence, he could be a very good photographer, but I said the teacher may not be able to teach well.
it is not the tool, it is a skill plus a little luck and lots of hard work.

i also feel that a DSLR is too complicated for normal 10 years old children. Furthermore a complicated system may kill her interest as they may not be patient enough to learn to use it properly. So i suggest perhaps some basic PNS camera may be good enuff.

Or is it a requirement to have DSLR in order to join the club?

The Canon Powershot series will be more than adequate for a 10 year old.

The school should never insist that a child should own an expensive camera in order to join a club. I don't think so lah. But like I said, nowsaday, schools very rich. Mine just bought not one, but TWO Canon XH A1 Hi-Def camcorders.

Yup, I agree. PNS is the suitable choice for under-12s.

DSLR at such tender age? using it infront of her (possibly) jealous clubmates is a recipe for trouble. wad if some1 "accidently" spoil it & your daughter comes crying to you to get another identical 1? how many are you willing to replace? ttz a cost factor...

also, if there's a competent instructor. he/she should be able to teach how to capture reasonably good pics regardless of camera types (35mm, compact digi, prosumer digi, DSLR). & able to inspire those under his/her to take betta pics. IMO, a gd instructor should not be seen as a walking instruction manual. motivating factor in hobby...

if your daughter is 1 who takes great care of her belongings & the above 2 are non-issues, & its not a passing fad. buy her that DSLR you think would suit her most & nurture the photographer in her!

If you feel that it's worth it for her to start now, consider the D40 kit. Small and light enuff for girls...

kids are fundamentally different from kids last time.

Good picture is from the person behild the camera.
Not because of DSLR or expansive DSLR.
A simple PnP should be good for kid and for them to build up the interest and skills then move on to DSLR.
Parents spoil the kids to give them D300!
right?

Actually, kids being kids, there's a limit to their capabilities at a certain age. Forget about teaching them rule of thirds, focusing techniques and what not. Once they hold the camera, they will forget everything. And that's actually OK. At the beginning, just let them have fun capturing the image. In education, this is called unstructured learning, good for base-level introduction.

They will get excited.
They will forget about the theory.
They will most certainly break/lose something (or at least, get it all dirty and grubby).

So kids are still fundamentally the same. :)

Er, excuse me for asking, but what's a PnP?

DSLRs are ok for pri sch kids. but should consider getting the cheapest you can get, expect it to be a disposable cam.

Still, my 2cents, is to get them a small compact instead, they have all-in-one lens from macro to tele... good for exploring child that shoots everything. they aren't pixel peeping...yet.

I think should be PNS. Point And Shoot cam. e.g. Compact digicam.
(Even DSLRs can be used Point and Shoot style)

I use my 30D w/ 35 f/2 P&S style (on M though). Shoot from the hip. Gets the best casual poses, but sometimes mis-aim. Heh.

Sorry for the OT.
