Many 2GB cards VS few 8GB cards?

I will be going away for holiday/attachment for about a month in Australia. Deciding whether I should get many of 2GB cf cards or few of 4GB/8GB cards. Which is of better option? People have been saying that if big sized ones get corrupted, everything will be gone. But in terms of practicability, bringing many cards will be quite a hassle.

Anyway, seems like I saw the price of an 8GB is more than double the price of 2x 4GB, which is contradicting coz as memory get larger, it gets cheaper rite? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Any advise?

I would rather work with a few more 2GB cards. Afterall how long does it take to change a card. At least if the card fails (which ever happen to me before) I still have photos from the other cards.

there is usually a point where marginal cost of capacity increases goes positive (it gets more expensive)... this changes as technology changes... and that is usually a good capacity of card to purchase (in my opinion)... at the moment 4GB seems to be the case... :)

I'd go with a few 4Gb cards instead... ;)

Actually, there's this mobile 40G hard disk that i had, which is able to read many card formats. I used it when i was in New Zealand and i took thousand of pics and store it there. Very afforable and portable. Easy to use also.:)

I also have a portable hard disk device (digimate) which is able to backup the CF cards but I do not dare to entrust all my photos to that device (although it has never failed before) and reuse the CF card after transferring the photos to the harddisk since I am not able to view the photos and know that it has actually been backed up. I a bit kiasu.. as a result I brought my laptop with me during my Cambodia trip...

I would go for many 4GBs if I am in your case.. 2GB is a bit too small for nowadays esp if you shoot raw.. and since you are going for a relatively long term of 1 month.. y not bring a laptop along? :bsmilie:

Personally, I would go for 4GB (Main card) while having the 2GB for standby. Usually, I would transfer all my image into my laptop after shooting. :)

Choose Many - don't put all the eggs in one basket.

get extreme III type? they're suppose to have some sort of super duper recovery thingy... or so i read...

Personally i thought getting a memory card that was big enough to do a full Raw+Jpg recording for 1 full battery charge is the way to do... so i won't need to do changing of batt and card seperately...

It also makes sense to not put all the eggs in the same basket... at least u just lose some eggs...

My choice would be multiple 2GB card instead of much lesser 8GB cards. The concern is of accidental failure of memory card.

Like someone suggested, 4GB could be an option too.

2GB or 4GB, get a good one, Sandisk (not Scandisk) Extreme III or Ultra II range is good, never hear of any failing.

Avoid those cheapo SD cards if you dun want "accidents".

i guess anything electronic is prone to failure it is just the frequency. somehow those "better" and more expensive brands memory cards are more reliable. but then again, there are bros who used the normal brand ones and all is fine.

maybe luck plays a more important factor.

for me, every photo i take is important, even as a hobbyist, so i invest in the more expensive memory cards...

u mentioned attachment. I assume u have access to computers and dvds don't u? Just get a couple of 2GB CFs. When they are full or what, burn them into DVDs (or CDs).
Alternatively, just buy a portable hard disk. Use a computer and transfer the files into it to store. Don't have to specially get a HD with a card reader for the transfer.
Of course, all this is assuming u have computer access. :D
