I intend to buy a dry cabinet to store my DSLR, lens and most impt, valuable videotapes. I saw today at Max Photo @ Centrepoint a dry cabinet called the AmPro Digital 85 (85L, 3 trays). I think the RRP was over $500 but the promo price is $338 inclusive delivery.
Is this a good brand/price? Can anyone recommend alternatives? Feedback appreciated.

digi-cab AD-80, 80L is going at 228 iirc... with free delivery but only 2 tray (3 layer including the base)

Both my dry cabinets fr Rodex (Tanjong Pagar). Some models on display at Tangs as well. Think its marketed as "Value" brand now. First one working fine for 11yrs but ran out of space

:D

I hope you don't mind if I borrow your thread since we're looking for the same thing.

I'm new to photography and I would like to ensure that my D40X is kept safely at home.

However, due to some space constrains, I can only get a dry box that's small, but as long as I can keep two (maybe four) lenses, the D40X and a PNS camera as well, I would be happy.

Are the dry boxes from www.rodex.com recommended?

For you, you can look at the 30l cabs. But if you intend to get more lenses in future, then you may want to look at bigger cabinets.

Not sure about Rodex but I'm very happy with my Digi-cabi

 A digi-Cabi DHC-80 (80L) would cost about the same (ok, maybe slightly more?) but comes with digital control....

I would suggest that you visit Carrefour to check out the dry cabinets they have. Their pricing is very reasonable. If you're at the Suntec Carrefour, walk further down from Carrefour (2nd floor), on your left there's a small camera shop called 'Digital Point'. Their pricing is pretty good as well and the guy there is very friendly too.

try tk or ms depending on where is more convenient for u. the price for digicabs are quite standard. won't flunctuate by much.

Hello, talking about this, do you see any significant increment in your electricity bill? After a month, my bill shot up another 30 bucks. Other factors might have a small play in contributing to this, but just want to confirm if this guy is really eating up a lot of electricity . Thx for sharing your experience!

Uhh.. I randomly chose a 30L off google, http://www.digihub.com.sg/ProductList.aspx?Bg=3&SubCategoryID=34

It states 5W, so thats 0.005kW/h, 1 month is (30x24) hours, so thats 3.6kW/h a month ya.. Electricity is less than a few cents a kwh, so i don't think the 30 bucks is due to your dry cabi

The dry cabinet certainly did not contribute to a $30 increase in bill but per Kwh is certainly not a few cents. It's standing at more than 21 cents the last time I bothered to look at my bill. :p

Might be the fact you're surfing CS more.... hahahah :bsmilie:

Hi guys, thx a lot for enlightening me with the calculation. Yes, it shld not make sense for that cabinet to cost me so much. Now i muz find the culprit!!!

settle for a nice 'lock-n-lock' with loads of silica gel for your 'dry' needs.. haha.. it's more economically sound..

Dry cabi is not that expensive lah compared to your camera and lens. I am using the Digi-Cabi AD 40L, able to put 3 bodies (30D and 2 old film SLR), plus my gear(see my signature) plus a EX580II, 3 more lens, batteries, filters. Its now quit pack already. Might upgrade to a 60L or 80L as I am expanding my collection  Pay more to get the DHC model if you can so that you can set the RH as it is digital controlled Vs the AD model where you have to set the RH by turning a knob, but once you set it, it should be ok unless you change the amount of items inside as this will in-turn affect the RH . Dry Cabinet is the single most important item in protecting your investment as once fungus grow then it will be too late liao. You can use the silicon gel but you will have to change it very often in our humid climate. In the long run it will still cost you money and lots of effort. Anyone interested in my 4 month old AD 40L can PM me ya ;) CS member have discount :bsmilie:

Carcinogenic...

for the camera?? lol.. i certainly wouldn't mind if it induces a 'lens' growth. wahahaa.. :p

actually, not really.. i don't change the gel in it that often.. and moreover, the availability of the microwave makes it really convenient. :) it's a couple of minutes in there and voila! gel ready to be used again!

but yea.. whatever it is, have something that keeps your stuff nice and dry.. alternatively you can place like 30 Thirsty Hippos around your room (pending on size) so you'll be living in one large drybox. heh.

i am using digi-cabi professional dhc-80. so far so good. i had a smaller digi-cabi earlier but i think the heating element was spoilt.

was told that the cost of electricity to maintain is very small.

was using dry box plus silicon gel when i first started the hobby many years ago. good and cheap too.

as you purchase more camera bodies and lenses, a dry cabinet would definitely be the way to go.

i just had my first DSLR camera, Olympus E510. I guess a dry box and silica gel should do the trick for me for a start. But how much silica gel to use and what are the price range for a dry box.

I am worried that for dry cabinet, needs to use electricity to keep it running = $$$.

Is dry box good enough? what are the maintenance required for DSLR?

Thank you.
