Hi,

Took this shot just this morning at Tang Dynasty Theme park. I like this shot because I find the color combination of bright red lipstick and black dress very appealing.

But for some reason, it seems to be missing something. Is it my composition? the lack of sharpness of the other model? I also cannot pinpoint it out. Maybe you guys can give your opinion. any suggestions to improve it?

Alright, from my noob 2 cents. With no offence intended.

1. The right of the model's face (the 1 standing on the right and in focus) has very bad blown highlights.

2. Skin tone looks weird to me, looks unnatural.

3. You amputated the model at the wrist, which I think is unjustifiable for this shot.

4. I would prefer both models to be in focus.

5. While you may feel that the crawler vine on the left balances the shot, I feel that it's distracting. My eye got led there, only to find nothing substantially interesting.

Just my humble and honest noob input. Others might have differing views.

Shoot more, and post more. :)

Thank you very much solbadguy.

I honestly didn't notice about the blown highlights of the model's face so your observation is very helpful. Next time will have to take note of that. I also agree that both models must be in focus.

Thanks a lot! :) great critique.

Hmm.. my critique was deleted... I was sure that I actually spend a lot of time typing my thoughts about the images and met the criteria unless the forum only allows critique on technical executions only?

appreciate the effort you put in in contributing to the critique. unfortunately, following the announcement from the link posted by Dream Merchant, there was an error and yesterday's posts were all lost.

There is really, not much to talk about this picture.

The reason you gave, the bright red lipstick contrasting against the black dresses, well, I do not find the red lipstick particularily bright. The are red alright, but more a subdue red.

The black dress, it might have worked, might, if the model in front did not wear a black dress with white flowers. The white flowers totally spoiled the picture.

The skin tone, skins, of both model looked patchy.

The lighting is flat and boring.

The pose, not natural, looked forced, and does not serve a purpose. Chopping of hand is a bad idea. The model in the back, her arm looked FAT.

The idea is good, but you probably had to make some adjustment. Compose closer to takecare of the white flowers on the dress. Re-pose the model so that arm does not look fat. Change lipstick so that they are truly bright. Don't use direct flash.

And shoot more!

I think if you had moved one or two steps to your left when shooting this photo, the lighting on the models would be better. Also zoom in little to avoid distraction from the white pattern on the skirt and the green vine at the left. I noticed that you have paid great attention on the model face by shooting slightly from her right is excellent. The perspective from this angle reduced her inbalance on the face. Hope you will try to shoot more and produce many exciting photos.
