Nikon D80 and Cannon EOS 40D

Hi all,

I thinking of getting Nikon DSLR with Kit.
But yesterday evening, I saw Cannon EOS 40D is offering this price.

Pricing for Cannon EOS 40D is Yen 169,600 = Est S$2174
The kit lens is 17-85mm

Pricing for Nikon D80 is

Yen 115,100
1st offer kit lens is 18-70mm

Yen 124,100
2nd offer kit Lens is 18-135mm

Which will be a good deal?

If you want a prosumer DSLR, go for the 40D. However, if you prefer Nikon, then go for the D80.

Buy neither. Try to hunt for the Canon 40D with the new EF-S 18 - 55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Kit lens -> http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=15704 . The new kit lens has a phenomenal MTF rating on all sites that reviewed it. Some say even better than the 17-85 IS and its way cheaper too. It should be out in Japan already.

U probably had some reasons for going with Nikon. Guess u could stick with it. I'm using a Canon 40D though and loved its speed.

Nikon D80 and Canon 40D is not an apple to apple comparison. Actually, there isn't really an apple to apple comparison as they are in different price ranges.

If you want to compare, then compare the semi-pro range before the pro models like Canon 1DsMkIII and Nikon D3... i.e. the Canon 40D with the Nikon D300. D80 is considered a prosumer.

You can find lots of information about both cameras.

That being said, it's not a good comparison, as the "competitors" for the 40D are the Nikon D300 and the Sony A700. The D80 is considered an "old" model in the entry-level DSLR range, like the Canon 400D or Sony A100.

I bought mine at Alan photo with the UOB offer S$2899.
Beside the standard canon stuff like 2GB CF and camera bag, it comes also with tripod, 30 litre dry cabinet, filter, LCD protector and 4GB CF card.

I was also thinking either the D80 or 40D but eventually set my mine on the 40D because of the faster continuous shooting (6.5 fps), live view function plus it is a newer model.
Another thing is becos my hand is too big for the D80, I'm almost 2 m tall u can imagine the size of my palm.

Somehow getting a camera is a tough decision as many people who have made their choice may tend to share with you good things about their choice. It's also a large part about which camera feels more comfortable in your hand too, the weight and ergonomics.

Nikon D40/x
Canon 400D
Nikon D80
Canon 40D
Nikon D300

As you can see, they slot in-between each other... so it is often hard to compare... which means each person buying would need to decide for himself/herself where he/she would come in.

Also, each camera's life nowadays is about 18 months before a new one comes out, so based on that list above... there should be a D80 replacement somewhere in the pipeline...

Totally agrees with you. There isn't a direct comparision between the 2 brands...
