Hello,

Anyone uses a NAS? I was thinking of getting one at Sitex tomorrow, because it's pretty convenient. How are the transfer speeds like? Is it similar to USB2.0/IDE/SATA? Was looking at the D-Link DNS-323. Thanks.

transfer rate depends on alot of thing... bandwidth of network, device itself, your com lan port speed... etc
for average, most router and lan port go about 100Mbps, that would equate to a transfer speed of somewhere around 10MB/s if the bandwidth ain't used... if your router is gigabit enabled, then it shouldn't be much of a problem...
NAS is not really recommanded if you are using wireless, as the transfer rate bottleneck of wireless is :sweat:.

My computer is connected to my Linksys WRT54G router through wire. So transfer speeds should be faster?

nope, you still got a bottleneck of 100Mbps... which probably give you a transfer rate of maximum 12MB/s, but most of the time its probably 8-10MB/s instead... if sharing is not your priority, go for a USB2.0 or any other, they easily give 50% faster transfer rate

might want to look out for seagate freeagent PRO, it does have software to make the devices looks like a "NAS" but its attached to a comp instead... one can access the drive thru other comp by using the provided software (also bottleneck transfer from your 100Mbps network), but at least one of your comp got a direct connection. having said that, the comp connected to the drive got to be booted up in order for other comp to see the device as well

yeah, ive been trying to get my NAS to work smoothly but even with 100baseT lan its still pretty slow compared to usb2.0. don't even dream of wifi! haha!


i wonder if gigabit is any better..
