Hi all,

I am new here and only I know little bit about photography. My hubby is a hobbist in photography. As Christmas is coming, I am thinking of buying him a lens as present. My budget is less than $400. Not a big budget. Any recommendations for suitable lens? :) Thanks in advance.

1st you've to tell us what system is he using (eg. Nikon etc), then you've to know what lenses he already have. Wow, I've gotta get my wife to see this thread too!

:embrass: I think with my small budget i cannot buy a very good lens. or any recommendation besides lens, what can I buy? he is using Canon 350D. Yesterday i spy on the box he have for his camera. he got 70-200mm and 17-40mm. If i didn't remember the numbers wrongly. :p

i rather my wife give me the 400 n i top up to buy something i really want.

You've probably got to be very thick-skinned to dare say that to your wife, if you're married.

Both of those are excellent lenses that cost at least more than a thousand

i envy ur husband..... :bsmilie:
maybe a flash? not using canon so i dunno how to recommend.
maybe a bag? i know females are especially good in chosing bags. but remember to spy what are the dimensions first b4 buying one. bags usually don't need $400. if he has a sling one, buy him a backpack (can see from the telelense, so maybe got some use). if he has a backpack buy him a sling bag. if he has both, then buy him a nicer one. just take note that usually guys prefer black or dark blue bags.
maybe a tripod? this one a bit hard for u to chose ar...

try not to get him a bigger dry cabinet as he may end up trying to fill them up... BBB

Pay for a swimsuit photo session, that will make ur hubby's day for sure. ..

kidding la. Maybe a 50mm 1.8, that won't blow your budget, I think it is $100 plus. And the remainder can use for a nice dinner.

that's where u are wrong. haha. i already asked her to buy me a 1ds when she gets her bonus. :bsmilie:

and nvr tell the wife how much u have spent on ur lenses. my Ls cost less than 1.5k in total! amazing! :sweatsm:

how bout a good tripod? unless he already has one...:bsmilie:

400 can get u a pretty decent one.

He's got a 17-40L and a 70-200L using a 350D?!

My suggestion?

GIVE HIM the $400 in the form of Ang Pow instead of buying him a lens since these 2 costs more than $400 each. :bsmilie:

Wow so many replies within one lens. Sorry what is B&W filter?
cannot reveal too much of wat he have. scully he happen to see this thread then no more surprise liao. :bsmilie: He never thought i would buy any gifts related to photography one.

Actually his hope is to get a full frame camera. Besides I dunno wat is a full frame camera. He want to save money for it. :bsmilie: i know that would cost a few Ks so I definitely no money to buy for him. :bsmilie:

and 50mm 1.8 is used for what one?

the 50mm 1.8 is a cheap but very sharp lens, its good for taking potraiture shots. And also, yes, gives the background bluring effect very well. If you get it, ask him to take more pics of you liao...hee hee:lovegrin:

aiyo, i think he rather take photos of girls in bikini. haha :bsmilie: just joking.

wat is this 1.8? I think i see b4 1.4 wat is the diff? Sorry me really a "know nothing" in photography. Pardon me if it's stupid question.

with your budget, why dun u get him the better 50mm f/1.4 instead? its just abit more and its faster than the f/1.8 as well.
