Suggestions for Hong Kong Trip

I'm taking a long trip to Hong Kong soon, will be there for more than a week.

Any suggestions on what to do or where to go?

Primary things I like to do:

1. Shopping - malls are good
2. Theme Parks
3. Photography shops (wonder if they will have the D3).

Suggestions would be appreciated.

I've not been there before, so newbie-friendly and clear directions would be good.

1: Malls are everywhere! The tourist guides will give you a list of more popular ones which sell things of more interest to tourists (but which may consequently be more expensive), but you can find lots of unusual stuff and bargains by going to the more localised, less promoted ones. There are too many to name and describe or recommend, so it would help if you could specify what kind of items will you be shopping for.

2: The two major theme parks are of course Ocean Park and Disneyland. If you've never been to any of the other Disneylands you might consider a visit to the HK one, otherwise you might be sorely disappointed as it is really quite small. I personally like Ocean Park and if you've been to other Disneyland elsewhere I recommend you visit this instead.

3: There have been several threads and posts in the past about the photography shops, unfortunately I'm busy with other things now so don't have time to dig them out, but a quick search should turn up the addresses of a few shops worth visiting. In general, avoid those with big neon signs in prominent locations which can be found in most tourist areas, since those are infamous for rip-offs. I think the D3 should be out about the same time it is in Singapore, if you come around that period.

If you are out shopping for photo equipment, it is best that you know the prices of the things in S'pore you are likely to buy in HK otherwise you'll end up being cheated.....the shopkeepers there are very smart and will not hesistate to make a quick buck especially if you are a tourist. And believe me, they can spot you from 20 paces away!

For camera shops I would only recommend Wing Shing, Man Shing, Tin Cheung, the 1st 2 are on Kowloon side Mongkok area along Sai Yeung Choi Street (Woman Street), the 3rd one is in Tsim Sha Tsui 1 of the hotel shopping mall. Currently exchange rate is very good in yr favor so u should find many good buys. HKG camera shops are not like Singapore Cathay or Alan Photo, in HKG the customer walks in, asks for the price, if ok then will ask the sales for a set and test out and pay and go. There are "department-type" shops Broadway, something like our Harvey Norman, in which u can see the list price, play around and dun buy.

I am going HK in Dec, so far my own plans are:

1. Go for the Eco Tour (visit marshlands I think)
2. Look for camera lens
3. Look for plastic resin kits
4. Get Apple iTouch ;p

I have been to Ocean park, its kinda nice and campy and you could see the two pandas there (if they are still in HK).

Not been to the HK Disneyland and since I am there in Dec, I expect the crowds to be CRAZY so best to avoid it.

2 main theme parks, as mentioned, disneyland and ocean park, loads of photographic opportunities in a theme park sense, if you get what i mean, personally i think disneyland is extremely, extremely overrated unless you have kids

for shopping, there is definitely no way for you to miss it, there are shops everywhere.

what you muist definitely do is visit avenue of stars at night, for photography, is beautiful and there are a lot of performers in the evenings, esp on weekends iirc

hong kong actually has a lot of scenic areas, too bad i didn't get to go because i went with my parents - not the outdoor type. can easily get information from hk tourism board. and their map provided and mtr line is so tourist friendly, i have never felt more secure in my entire life, i won't worry too much about getting lost unless you really bumble a lot

Sorry, it is something that I collected over time and I have tried quite a lot of them. hehe

And all in Hong Kong dollars (Price should be around the same as those are 2007 price)
