Hi,

can anyone recommend a good portrait lens that can be used both indoors and outdoors for canon 400D or 40D? Thanks.

Hi,

Canon's 50mm f1.8 is cheap, but got complaint on it non-USM motor. Cost about $130+ in most place. Canon's 50mm f1.4 USM would be a better choice..... but cost much more. Think $650+....... :(

Thanks for the information. Is the 50mm f1.8 an autofocus lens? What about the 85mm f1.8 lens? I am thinking of getting the kit lens EF 18mm - 55mm + another portrait lens.

Both 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 are good portraits lenses. You have to work out your shooting space, as well types of portraits you are shooting(ie. head, half body or full body). If you have lots of space, the 135mm f/2L would be excellent too. But if you have to shoot in confine spaces, or love to shoot full body, then you can consider the 35mm f/2.

for a 1.6x body, i would choose 50mm series. which model would depend on budget.

Thanks for the advice. Think I will go for the 50 mm F/1.8 to hone my skills first.

i agree on this :)
i hav bought mine for my 400D :)

sorry to say this
but 50mm f/1.8 is plastic mounted :(
its a great strike bw the 600 odd 50mm f/1.4
urgh! kick canon :(

True. That's y i said best bang for buck. If u want better built then opt for the f/1.4, or pay a lot more for the f/1.2L.

1. I read the lens lineup in Canon website and it shows price $159.00 for EF 50mm f/1.8 II, but its focus drive is 'MM'. Wat does it means? Is it this lens has no autofocus?

2. Can this lens EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM take portait?

Ans
1. Yes it has AF. MM means micro motor,if i rem correctly, it is slower n noisier than USM, ultrasonic motor.

2.Yes.

Hi Guys,

Adding to this question, what is a good lens for taking full body portraits without distortion for a 1.6x camera?

I realise when I use my Tamron 17-50mm to take full body portraits, the subject tend to be distorted, making their legs look short. The distance between the subject and me is around 2m. Should I just move further away? Also because I am 1.82m tall and my subject is normally shorter, will the way I stand makes a difference too? instead of standing straight and shooting downwards, should I bend down/squad to match the height?

Thanks

the 50mm or 85mm is good. negligible distortion. flattens the perspective as well. your tamron will definitely have distortion.

u probably need to stoop abit or do horse stance. i am 1.8 so we face similar problems. i try to use tripod whenever possible.
