effect of fungus on lens?

hi. after using my set up for sometime, some of the old lense have fungus that persistently come back after a period of time though it is kept in the dry cab and at the suggested level of humidity. being sick and tired of sending them for cleaning, does fungus affect the image taken? when i use mine, it doesn't affect as far as i can see.

advice anyone?

well it depends on the amount of fungus on the lens i think

some lenses produce 'misty' effects. i think a CSer was selling a 'completely fungussed' sigma 70-200 (i think) lens which produced interesting images

well if i were u, id keep the lenses in the dry cabi as much as possible, but still use them normally. of course, some ppl might disagree

Then you should not keep them together with your good lenses because the spores will spread to your other lenses. These fungi are probably already deep rooted in the glass and hard to clean thoroughly.

I have a 35mm that had fungus that could not be cleaned off completely. Kept it in my dry cab with my other lenses, so far no infections :sweat:.

If u have enough fungus on the lens, you and get very romantic effects.......

the focusness not so much of a problem for me cause i am using a MF lens.
as for the spreading, alot of people say that it will spread but so far so good though i keep all my lense together. no money for 2 dry cab:embrass:

You cannot see anything because you don't have anything to measure against.

To see if there's any effect, you obviously need to compare a clean lens against a fungus lens, take the same scene in the same lighting with the same settings and then do a comparison.

And you'll need to choose the setting correctly. For instance, if you know that fungus decreases contrast and resolution, you'll need to choose a scene with high contrast and resolution for comparison. And then you might need to enlarge the image sufficiently to compare.

Bottom line is, you can't say that there's no effect without a proper test. Frankly, there must be some kind of effect, the only question is whether you know how to measure it.

you can buy a dry box for such problems......that is what i m doing

Some fungus are not easily visible by simply looking thru the lens. There are times that fungus are so terrible that they grow along lens casing as well. That's why it's important to ensure that the lens casing is clean

perhaps you can send your dry cabi for a check? with proper care and a proper dry cabi, you shouldnt get fungus. unless some parts of the lens (including the glass elements) were wet when you kept it, or your dry cabi is near any window or wall, which can bring up the temperature pretty significantly during afternoons.

YMMV though.

that lens is the lens that i use the most so occasionally i will just leave it in the camera bag without taking it out. i guess that is why. its a very old lens. when i got it its already pretty fungified liao. sent to nsc for cleaning a year ago now its back

Hey i have a question here. I got a fungified lens a 24-70mm from a friend and i used it. Will the spores spread into my camera's body and damage it? and whats the estimated cost to clean the lens?
