Any suggestions?

I have Vios and Lancer GLX (<$60k) in mind but I'd like to see comments on Latio and City also.

Answer: TAXI.

heheh sorry I just can't help it...that's my solution in the end so long as I remain in Singapore.

Vios, City & Jazz quite fuel efficient. But I would suggest taking public transport if possible as the raise in oil prices & ERPs will kill you. Besides taking public transport will cut down on pollution & save our ailing Earth.

That's what I'm using now.. ;p But sometimes difficult to get one and quite a hassle especially when bringing baby around..

Yeah.. City was actually on the top of my list but it's a bit pricey, can anyone convince me that it's worth the money? ;p Jazz is out because my wife doesn't like hatchbacks. ;p

at 55K, a jazz/fit is super fuel efficient hitting like 14 - 15km/l but the boot space is pathetic. so if you have lots of baby SOP to lug around (pram, milk bottle, bags, diapers, etc..) you will easily fill the rear seat and tiny boot.

I would put it into a cheap mit lancer 1.6 ~47K it can hit about ~12-13km/l if you're not heavy footed but with a $15K savings from the jazz.. it'll go a long way.

I have bad experience with nissan and mazda with very bad FC.

go for hybrid or CNG :D I'm contemplating on that if I managed to get that job that pays my car. eyeing the Civic Hybrid actually.. hate the looks of the prius

Why not try those car co-ops. My Brother in law does that with rented short term cars. He is a financial advisor but as he does not need to be out or using the car all the time since he only service the expat market...he work out to renting the car like 5 days out of every month.

I love cars...alway have but in Singapore? It is just not making any good sense me.. for me anyway and my job don;t require one...maybe you could justify the need with your family but maybe borderline needs so it is a hard choice thingy lah. good luck man but do give renting or car ops a try an alternative.

The bloody ERP is quite a killer these day. And watching the bloody news yesterday when they cover the news ...I hate the way the reporter make it sound like.... if I have an analogy of sorts for it.... I liken it to they are saying...we have come out with a way to slow down the raging river from rushing to the village. By implementing this we have slowed down the flooding water. That is the impression I get as a matter of fact...like they are doing us a favour or we asked for it. I wonder..did anyone of you asked for it? Anyone really complaining that we need to restrict more traffic from getting in to save us from ourselves? Don't get me wrong...I am all for controlling to some extent cars going in but I can't see how bad it is or was getting or I just feel they brought this about badly man. Anyway...OT. Sorry.

All I am saying is THIS IS and WILL ALWAYS be part and parcel of life in Singapore. Each day goes by the car is less about neccesity but more about status symbol and luxury geared more for the well heeled then the regular joe. Even if you managed to get a cheap car...other factors will still sap and eat up your expenses. I guess that is why after many years of thinking it over I decided to discontinue taking my driving and opt for taxi and other means of transport. For me at least it has gotten that bad when I figure out the numbers and the fact that more of the time the only one that wanted me to get a car was a few of my ex g/fs! hehe...well good news is they are all EXs!. I can comfortably own a car but when you do the math and see how much you will be throwing into the owning of the car per year. It is scary when you look at the bottom line. Alot of that money could go to other things that could make me more money. Okay that's my rant.

One ear in, One ear out....

well said, i also love to have a car but am still working out my sums if it is really something which i want to such that i am willing to give up my other wants, such as traveling 2 or 3 times a year, buying a luxury watch, every 2 year or so.....spending the rest of my $$$ on my boy....etc..

end of the day, it is still a temptation...

vios should be good enuff, if you dun mind the plastic feel of the panel. but then, the dodge caliber i used to drive also very plastic inside (for a $90K 2.0 car).

else can wait a little while longer for the new altis, or can go for the old altis. sure can get car very fast. only took me one month, from booking till collection.

latio and city, i would consider latio as more spacious. depends on what your taste lor.

Any suggestions?

For me I would prefer a Altis/Vios/Lancer as I don't really like Honda cars. If you want cheaper cars, consider the Korean or China made ones. But be prepared to sacrifice some quality & features.

I heard Korean/China cars are not that fuel efficient.. With the rising fuel price, I think it should be a concern for me. What's OMV?

Okie.. point taken about Jazz.. so I guess since my wife is not really for hatchbacks, the lack of boot space should turn me away from it also. The price shown on Honda website is now 59k. I wonder if it's the price for the 08 model, otherwise, it's quite pricey.

Lancer GLX auto (CVT) is now 51k. Seems like the price has gone up a little. Is the engine noisy?

ya, dont get a nissan sunny ex saloon, its only have 9km/l !!!!!!!!! /cough blood

Sigh... I don't know too.. I haven't really went through the sums yet, but I am just wondering if the convenience (is having a car really more convenient?) is worth the money.. :dunno: I have a 6 month old boy and I find that sometimes it can be difficult to get a cab. Then again, having a car may have other sets of problems like parking..... :dunno:

I'm not really keen on cars, but in Singapore it's a big help, partially because public transport isn't that great unless you live/work next to MRT stations. Buses are just painfully sllllooooooowwww and unpredictable here. With a car, commute to work takes me 10 minutes rather than an hour by bus (one way). If you save a substantial amount of time every day that you could rather spend with your family/kid, that's quite attractive. Plus the option of doing groceries only once a week (no problems carrying stuff), being able to transport durians and pets.

Downside is environmental damage, monetary cost, and the stress of having to cope with world-class idiots on the roads.
