Camera Housing for Hiking Trip

Hi people. I'll be on a hiking trip in Korea soon, and I was wondering what would be the best place the put my camera during the hike.

It's an Outward Bound trip so I'll assume it'll not be overly leisurely. That also means I'll be carrying one of their backpacks, which eliminates my option of getting a camera backpack... I'm also quite sure there wouldn't be enough space to stuff the camera inside together with the other stuff..

I use a Canon EOS 400D and my favourite walk around lens is a EF 70-200mm IS USM. Around that time, it would probably be snowing around there and the 400D isn't exactly weatherproof... Any suggestions?

I used a Lowepro Nova 1 AW for my A100 and a trip up Mt. Kilimanjaro. Protected it well.

crappinni, i used lowepro offtrail2 during my usual hiking trips, together with a 30l backpack. the last hiking done was around 10 hours per day for 2 days. the beltpack is comfortably attached at my waist during hiking but the only complaint i have is when you are going up a steep slope, sometimes the beltpack will limit your movement. maybe you can take a look at a smaller beltpack, which should provide equally good versatility but with minimum obstruction. again it depends on your camera setup.

have never been to a hiking trip at a snowing region, so can't provide any valuable input for that.

I checked out the Lowepro Off Trail 2 and it looks pretty suitable. Do you strap it to your front? Don't see how it would fit at the back with the backpack.. Strapping such a large thing in front might be a little weird too.

crappinni, i strap it at the side. you can's strap it at the back because of your backpack and there is no way that you can strap it at your front since it will obstruct your legs movement. you should take a look at the item and try it to get a few of what is it like when you are moving around with it hanging at you waist. off trail (not 2) would be smaller and easier to move around with it.

I've been on a few trekking trips and so far I've always put my camera in a waist pouch (those old school drink stall auntie type), strapped to the front. You sacrifice a bit of protection for the camera, but I feel it is the best compromise between mobility and having the camera close at hand. With some adjustment, you can still carry your backpack.

This works for me because I normally fall on my ass, so the camera is safe. And even if I do fall forward, hopefully my legs or hands will break the fall before hitting the camera. So far so good

This option might not work with your 70-200 IS lens cos' it's a little big to fit in a waist pouch... but then again, if you are on a trekking trip, wouldn't a wide angle be a better choice?
