Hi Nikonians,

I am a Canon user but my brother just bought a Nikon D40x and is seeking my advice on what are the MUST HAVE lenses for him beside his kit lens of 18-55mm. I know nothing about Nikon systems.

Could you kindly recommend the not too expensive ones (below $1K), even third party also good. A rough indication of the pricing would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Don't think there's a MUST HAVE lens for the D40x, depending on your shooting style and subjects. If he wants the longer range, he can go for the 55-200mm VR to go with the kit lens. Else he can consider the 18-200mm VR.

According to the price guide below, the 55-200mm VR is about S$400.

I guess there are no "must have" lenses but rather, he should see what lenses he needs. I might say the 105mm VR Micro lens is a "must have" but it would be useless to your bro if he doesnt take macros/portraits.

In general, the more popular ones (ard $1k) are 50mm f1.8, 18-200mm VR, 55-200mm VR, Tamron 17-50mm, Sigma 18-50mm for genral use.

Thanks for the quick reply, gentlemen.

I think he has no fixed preference on what subject at this juncture. But I am sure he needs something better as his job requires him to shoot high up from helicopter (in KL area) as he designs highways etc. So I guess a lens with IS (or VR in Nikon) is welcome, right?

i would think if shooting from a helicopter the VR will come in really handy

18-200 VR - must have
70-300 VR - depends what you are shooting from the copper

Guess the 18-200 VR kind of covers most ranges he needs. But it must be quite expensive though.

ya, its around 1.2k++. but its quite a good all rounder lens to have

I would think Nikon 18-200mm VR (S$1,100 to $1,200) or Sigma 18-200mm OS HSM (S$750-$800), depending on the budget.

18-200mm at $1100? Where?

I was quoted 1190 at LORD's.

18-200 is a must have for me.
