Hey, Any idea how much is this camera selling for now?

I think I heard from my friend say aroun 700+ Cost almost the same as a D40 if you have the $$ I think you should go for the D40

true, but d40 does not offer a 28-504 lens at that price... more $ will be required to get those lens which add to the total setup cost, the size and weight... etc. beside that it doesn't offer "liveview" which many of the beginner here prefer to use and of cos the famous OIS...

anyway, this is a pretty endless comparison, so i don wanna go in to details of which is better or wat...

Yeah... a 500mm lens would cost you quite a lot and it certainly won't be very compact.

If u can live wif the noise, i'd think it's fine ba...;p

so far it's the noise that is the only thing that prevents people from buying? all other features seems good!

I am thinking of getting it as my travel camera. Dont want to lug my DSLR around on trips.

Hmmm yeah, I'm going to Bangkok soon and I don't really feel like lugging my DSLR around. Don't even know whether it might attract unwanted attention from robbers. :( :dunno:

I don't think there is one camera that is good all round; here is what I gather: Panasonic FZ18: fast focusing, image quality good in good light; noise in low light. Olympus SP550/560: good image quality in low light, soft in good light, but slow. Fuji? anyone knows about Fuji? Even the G9 is noisy in low light.

So, if I do not want to lug by DSLR (heavy! if you go on one-week vacation, you feel like chucking it away after the third day...), what choice? The technology is there, but the pricing is such that you cannot get an ideal camera. even DSLRs are noisy above ISO400. Any advice?

I just played around with the FZ18...good images, fast focusing, but boy...in night, have to really adjust settings. Any advice how to improve the image further?

It won't give u the 504mm range but don't forget, 504mm is the 35mm equivilant, if u use a D40, you need a 300mm lens on a slr plus superzooms quality of lenses tend to reduce significantly, if you want something similar for a slr try the tamron 17-250mm (correct me if im wrong). The main thing lacking about the fz 18 is that the max apperture is f/8. I know it should be smaller in slr comparison but it is not small enough for a good landscape shot. The noise on the D40 is also significantly better than the noise control on the fz 18. Live view is only used when yur in a difficult angle to to take a picture but majority of the pictures can be taken through the viewfinder. Plus the dynamic range of the sensor is equivilant to that of a compact. Unless yur doing bird photography I don't see the need for such a long zoom. Ive seen professionals taken insect photography using a 200mm on a slr and the pictures come out great. Im not a nikon user nor am I against Panasonic as I even used to own a fz-20 before but for the price gap, i seriously suggest u go for the slr instead.

So is this camera worth it to get? For a travellers camera?
