one qn about nikon d40x AF function

i am still very new to the dslr world, and is thinking of getting a dslr. for my 1st dslr, i am still comparing between the nikon d40x and canon eos 400d.

actually one of my concerns is the autofocus thing. after reading the stuff from www.dpreview.com, it appears that the nikon body lacks a AF motor in its body and needs the newer type of nikkor lenses (AF-S) to do AF.

my qn is that suppose i buy a Tamron AF18-250mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) lens, will i still be able to do autofocus with the nikon body?

Tamron lens unable to be used on Nikon D40 bodies as the bodies lack the drive motor to perform auto-focus function with Tamron lenses. You need Nikon AF-S lenses or Sigma HSM lenses.

I second that! I'm a D40 user myself... if you want to get any other lenses that does't have AF-S, HSM then you just have you manually focus it..

In Canon, the function is known as Image Stabilizer (or IS)

Yes, in Canon's case it's the IS lenses.

Or you can get a Sony/Pentax/Olympus with AS built-in the body.

in that case, then by comparing a nikon d80 and eos 400d would be a better chose. as such, both models offer almost equal degree of freedom to choose whatever type of lens the user requires (with respect to the AF issue)...

so the qn now boils down to the cost of the body and future cost of buying lenses rite??

Yup. I suggest looking in the "Marketplace" section. Lots of good deals there now on both these bodies.

Dun forget to consider the other aspects such as flash, cards, and other support, etc...

afaik...if it says HSM, u can use auto focus on the D40

the AF works for d40x.

I wouldn't say the rest aren't good, but at the colour reproduction and iTTL standards, Nikon is definitely hard to beat on the flash system.

I believe the 400D is slightly more expensive, haven't seen any first-hand ones under $1000 yet. As for the built-in flash on the cameras, they are pretty much similar amongst all brands as far as built-in flashes. They are effective only up to around 3m or so and don't expect significant benefits from iTTL or ETTL on these flashes.

Personally, I don't judge favourably on the D40x simply because of the lens issue. You will be missing AF on a lot of Nikon's best lenses which don't have AF-S on them. Despite what some people claims, it's difficult (not impossible) to manually focus better and FASTER than AF systems these days.

Maybe you can look at the D80 if your budget can be stretch, the kit itself is quite a good value pack. Of course, you have to decide base on whether photography is going to be a long-time interest or not to justify the spending.

I am using the Sigma OS HSM 18-200mm on my D40X, which AF well.
