Hi to all, I am a newbie, just got myself a Canon EOS 400D with a Sigma 18-200mm DC OS lens, I am thinking of getting a tripod, saw from this dedicated Canon magazine (Photoplus)recommending this Velbon Sherpa 435 (lightweight) and 4-way pan & tilt head, what do you guys think? Any other recommendations? Where is the best place to view and shop for one (affordable price/good aftersales service)? Est budget to be set aside? Pls assist, thanks!

Most of the recommended shops like CP, MSC, John3:16, TK etc. will let you test the tripods out. Even if you are on budget, do set aside 300-400 to get tripod and ball head. IMO, ball head is faster to adjust than pan-and-tilt head. For tripod, brands like Manfrotto, Benro, Slik are good and cheaper. If you have a deep pocket and want to upgrade only once, be prepared to spend about $2000 but they will last you for decades.
You can also look in the BnS section, there are a couple of tripods on sale right now.
Do bring your heaviest setup to the shop for testing and also anticipate the heaviest setup you may get in future. This may save you from upgrading too often should you find your tripod/ball head unable to support the load.

Sorry to hijack but I will like to ask bros if it is wiser to get a good tripod (Manfrotto 055XPRO ~$220) now and get the best (IMO, Gitzo 3540XLS ~$1400) later when I have a greater budget or to get the best now even it means having to pay through installment?
If you are sure you will be buying the Gitzo eventually, might as well buy now and pay through installments.
Barring the case where the price drops drastically, I see not much difference between saving up and paying through installments.
At least you get to use the Gitzo with the installment scheme.:think:

So a more probable issue is that a newer and "more desirable" model comes out. Then again, we can never catch up, so might as well buy when heart is set upon it.
go to cathay, try the slik sprint pro, should be ok, though i expect the head will not last long

A BIG thanks for all the feedback though I am still quite confuse by the different brands on the market. I would like a good solid one but within my budget of perhaps not more that $250 (including BH if possible) as I am still relatively new, just need one to support my camera, lens and a flash in later stage. Heard of manfrotto as perhaps one of the best but seems rather ex..... hmm......:think:
