Help: A very disappointed shot

Hi Guys, I had shot this photo yesterday at the zoo. The environment lighting was quite gloomy. What i'm disappointed at is the tortise was moving so slow that i still can capture it blur. I'm totally confused.

Settings are:

Fujifilm S6500fd
Lens Aperture: F/8
Shutter Speed: 1/10 secs
Focal Length: 9mm
Exposure: 1/10 secs
Iso: 800
Mode: Shutter Priority

Shutter speed is too slow.


What is the focal length (35mm) ? Did you use a tripod ? To freeze a moving object like tortise, you need 1/60sec or faster.

The rule of handheld is 1/focal length sec.

e.g. If you use 100mm focal length, to get sharp shots, your shutter speed need to be at least 1/100 sec.

The S6500fd uses a 1/1.7" sensor, so the focal length multipler is about 7.5x. (ie. 9 x 7.5 = 68mm).

As megaweb was saying, the shutter speed was a bit too slow. If you have increased the shutter speed to about 1/40 which is 2 stops down, the shutter priority on the camera will have chosen an aperture of maybe f/4.0 which should still give you a correct exposure.

As a guide, any shutter speed slower that 1/30s is a bit slow for hand-holding as the effect of hand-shake will become apparent. To get a reasonable sharp picture, for most people 1/60s should be alright. You also have to factor in the focal length, the longer you zoom in, the more magnified hand-shake blur is, so correspondingly the shutter speed will have to increase again.

Dont be disappointed, even if you can beat the Tortoise this time round, this can be easily solve as mention by the fellow bros above. Read more and try shooting with different setting on your camera to learn more I am sure you will freeze the Tortoise in no time :bsmilie:

shutter speed is slow but i think the cam is focusing on the wrong place also. The fence looks decent and even the trees and the other tortoise at the right corner looks sharper.

instead of using shutter priority, try using aperture priority. ur aperture was f/8, which is quite small for such shooting conditions

maybe you'd like to change it to the smallest possible aperture, then you'd have a shutter speed of about 1/80s at f/2.8 with the same exposure

it might have been better if u had taken the shot from a different angle, without the wooden things in the front blocking some of the tortise

Looks like the sharp area is the fence/pole in the front, not the tortoise.

Most compact camera will be tricked in this situation to focus on the nearest subject, the wooden pole instead of the tortoise.
Do yourself a favour, move to a place where there is no obstructions to your subject.

Read your camera manual to check whether you can select specific focus point. If there is, use it for such situation.
