hey hey people,
I'm new to this forum.
so yeah, I'm rather a newbie in photography too.
can anyone tell me like where to get the best buys from 2nd hand dealers?
and how do I choose a camera?
for example, just for leisure and fun?
your help will be truly appreciated!

Digital or film?

If you're getting second hand, get a friend to go with you when selecting the cam to check it thoroughly.

I strongly advise you to go do some homework first, e.g. read up at least the basics of photography and find out what is the specific area you are really interested. Areas may include street photography, macro, landscape etc etc. While there are some lenses that are suitable for (almost) all occasions, there are also lenses out there for specific uses.

Like Jem777 mentioned, get someone to go with you when selecting 2nd hand equipment. Get someone who at least knows a bit about photography.

I know some people are going to bombard me for saying this but if you really want to learn photography, use film because it forces you to plan and think of your shots before you press the shutter. Besides, film cameras are a dying breed (very sad), so 2nd hand film cameras are much cheaper compared to DSLRs.

use a point and shoot camera
get a disposable one even
=D

Great advise from matt.

But if you are going to get a dslr, you really need to read up on lenses and fundamentals. It will cost you some money. :)

decide on what you want to do with your camera
and then take it from there

we have a very active Buy and sell forum that you might want to look at.
but as mentioned above, do your homework first

if it is just for fun and leisure snapping..just get a handphone with a decent camera..
my recommendation will be the SE-K850i..if u can't wait, the K810i is oso good enuff..:D

He actually has a good point...

Learn the basics of photography first. Learn what sort of pictures really interest you. Is it landscape? Portrait? Candid? etc.

Start with a point-and-shoot. If you really are serious about wanting to get started, then get a Prosumer cam first, like a Sony H7 or H9, or the Canon G7/G9 series. They have enough manual controls for you to learn and experiment, but also have a very good "auto" mode if you just want to take nice pictures.

If you are getting DSLR, I would suggest loan one first and try out whether you like it or not. Otherwise start with a PnS. IMO, no offend to others, getting a prosumer camera and later upgrade to DSLR will cost more as you are less lightly to use the prosumer camera after you have the DSLR.

Agree, dslr is very expensive..

Why not rent and try out 1st before jumping into it then regret ?

Lomo cameras are actually cheap! But most of them are film. They use "messed up" or multicolored lenses in a deliberate attempt to get an artistic image.

But the effects can also be created in photoshop in about 1 minute... :p

How about going the 35mm route? Slightly cheaper start up, plus better looking bodies to boot, in my opinion anyway.

Lomos are pretty cheap, you can get a holga at ruby I think, not sure of the cost. Quite abit of vignette in lomography, I personally like it alot and might get one myself.

Can I quote this from a International Prize Winning Photographer? :bsmilie:

my best pictures were taken on my Fuji F10 point and shoot. and they're on my website!
You can quote that!!!!

the cheaper the equipment, the more willing you are to use it roughly instead of being concerned about it

lomo is basically film photography.

u can get a holga at http://perlyinc.com/store/index.php or even 2nd hand ones at the B&S. each camera has its pros and cons and for film photography. if you're keen on film photography, u must be prepared to like buy film, develop film, buy film develop film. :)

Best Advice !!!

Don't become an equipment collector .... use the equipment that you have and use it to the best of its ability ... Bigger, better equipment does not equate good photos ....

No matter what or whose advice you follow or whatever budget you have, you will get it wrong at the begining. You'll only learn through experience and through a few rounds of BBB before you know what you want or need! Don't take this as discouraging but you will find out that this is true, unless of course, photography doesn't jump up and bite you such that you get the bug!!! Ask all the ppl who post here ! They all went thru' the same process - I certainly did! ;)

That said, my advice is to get a second hand (read:used) entry level dslr with a kit lens and armed with a 1 - 2 gb memory card you can shoot away to your heart's content. With this set up you might actually enjoy photography and when you get bitten by the bug, you will not lose too much on your initial investment! (Hopefully!)

Enjoy and welcome to the wonderful world of photography!
