Was doing grocery shopping and took one Skippy peanut butter, as usual checked the expiry date. Still good but upon close inspection, I saw something suspicious.

The expiry date was stamped on the top cover which means if the product expires, just replace the top cover with new dates and continue selling to the public. What a great idea to save cost. I put back the peanut butter and bought something else.

There was only one expiry date on the product: the top cover. I think the proper way is to stamp another expiry date on the tamper proof cover, gives one more confident to purchase.:thumbsd:

In case you didn't know, what they do to the expiry date on packed meat (lean meat, chicken wings, drumsticks.. etc) is worse. I've worked inside a few supermarkets before. You won't wanna know what they do inside.. :sweatsm:

...

the tamperproof cover can be replaced by the factory also what

like that die already la, everything also people want to trick you
like right now, i'm pretty sure there's bugs in my room
people want to keel me, etc

i think the best way to solve this is for the factory
to set a best by period, say 2 years
and then everytime they manufacture, tear part of the straits times on that day and stuff it into the peanut butter

maybe you'll be happy then! :bsmilie::bsmilie:

what about kfc? what about macdonald's?
what about hawker centre food? ALL USE EXPIRED FOOD AARGH ALL DIE ALREADY HELP

My aunty who works at NTUC Fairprice told me that "certain branded bread bakery" resells their loaves of bread for 2-3 days. All they do is to change the tiny plastic tags to the later 'use by' dates.

She advised me before I grab that loaf of bread from the shelf, check the neck of the packaging to see if there is a torn mark.

but actually why do you guys worry?

we all know that consumer products these days are all tagged overzealously

best by and use by are different things
and of course, most of the time if you take care of the food properly you can store the food for longer than it is expected to last
e.g. freezing bread

I do not really enjoy toasting rock-hard bread slice in my toaster, so I prefer not to freeze it.

I've worked in supermarkets before. The "fresh fruits and veggies"...

I once put down a box of oranges... up comes a cloud of greenish "smoke"... :faint:  Inside.... More than half are rotten, some rotten til you can't tell if it's an orange or something else.

Those are 'radiation-fortified' oranges. Lots of antioxidants which are essential for leading a healthy lifestyle.

wanna tell just tell lah. no need to be secretive. No need to disclose the name of the supermarket. Just for public awareness.

yah... create some awareness among your fellow bros and sis here. pray... do tell us.

What I've seen in supermarkets I worked at...

If cabbage/lettuce leaves are rotten, they peel off the outer leaves and sell the inside. The oranges example, sometimes the boxes arrive on Day 1, and were only put up on the baskets for sale on say Day 3. Once I had a box of 40 oranges, less than 10 are "still ok". Some had even completely decomposed. :faint: Winter melons, slightly mouldy? Just rub off the mould and sell. I never worked in meat dept so I dunno.

If supermarkets are like that, so are some of the restaurants. You won't know if the ingredients used are fresh or not.:eek:

Better to eat home-cooked food.

this reminds me of a tv show in malaysia some time back.

there's this posh restaurant and there's a open-air mamak stall selling food by the roadside next to the restaurant.

a couple walked past the mamak stall and despiced it for being unhygenic. so they went into the restaurant and ordered food. the waiter goes to the back door and placed the orders at the mamak stall.

so beware where you go and eat...
