What camera are you using now bro? Maybe you want to think about these first:

What do you want to take?
How much money & time are you going to invest in this hobby?
Are you ready to get more equipment n accessories?

IMHO is to get a prosumer to get used & learn more about the art first.

currently using S5700 and now camera is in repair centre , wanna to get a better camera , bcoz S5700 is lacking of something..like bulb mode and stuff

D40 will give better output than a Fuji 6500. (even in the context of night, i believe, due to sensor ratio)

To built as focal length equiv of Fuji 6500 on D40, most likely u will spend more than 2x the price of Fuji 6500.

No one can tell u which one is better. Only u will know. There is always something for someone.

If u look forward to explore more in the dSLR arena, a D50 or D80 will be a much better choice than a D40. Do a search here and u'll know why. But if u just wanna simple, D40 is pretty gd enough.

S9600 is a very good prosumer model, with "hot shoe".
D40 is a very basic dSLR model.

If u ask me, i'll give my $ to 9600.
Reason:
1) I'll most likely keep it for travelling purposes when i switch to dSLR later on. Trust me, u won't like the feeling of going around the world with a bag of dSLR stuff.
2) Cheaper, more stuff to play with (as in price vs price kinda comparisions to D40), big focal range, and best of all, can record video!
3) I was a user of 9500 and was very happy with it. I'm sure 9600 will be a better model.
4) Learn how to use a dSLR when using the 9600. I am referring to the basics of photography and how to handle a camera properly.
5) U can save big bucks if one day u discover u don't like photography.

End of the day, no one can tell u wat u want. Only u know wat u want. I met some people who likes to use huge cameras (those pro-body kinda camera, maybe 1.5x the size of D40), and when i ask them, the real reason was the uniqueness and size that makes them feel good (i shall not comment on their skill). Conclusion: Diff ppl looks for diff things.

Recommendation: Think carefully what u want.
