It seem like the white E5C cables will have that algae phenomenon after some time. I've not yet seen that with the rest.
hi Jeanie, i'm no audiophile but like you I do like a good pair of earphones that would give me great sound. i myself bought the Shure E2C - as compared to similar price range models of Westone and UE they weren't the BEST sounding however they fit the best.
So my advice would be to get a pair that fits you very well and feels great in the ears, you're more or less assured of good quality sound when getting one from brands like Shure, but then again you may have your own personal tastes so it's important that you try them out before buying.
As for using in-ear phones, just remember to keep the volume at a resonable level. They were designed to go deeper in your ear so that you get less interference from ambient noises, allowing you to listen at lower volume levels. As with my E2C, i have set my ipod to cap my volume at a certain level - those things are very close to your ear drums when inside and if you listen to loud stuff all the time it'll probably affect your hearing.
As for sound isolation, in-ear phones were actually designed for that purpose so no running away from it. I know you mentioned you don't take public transport, but when I wear my E2C on the mrt, i can't hear the noise from the train or people around me when music is playing at mid-level volume. Might help if you're listening when outside or have a noisy office hehe.
I know i seem biased for the E2C, but bo pian I own one hahah ;p. i highly recommend it if you're just trying out in-ear phones and on a pretty tight budget. I got mine for $140.
Anyway, good luck on finding a pair for yourself =)

Interesting. I wonder those cables that are translucent type - those that you can see the metal sheilding in the cable will suffer the same fate?
I'm also worried in purchasing these kind of earphones as i notice sometimes the insulation outside turns "sticky" and seem to "melt".

My Westones UM2 uses the transparent/translucent cable and it didn't turn green. My old white Sony EX70SL is now green in colour. :thumbsd: Err... so avoid white cables? :dunno:
kind of sad huh. It is almost embarassing nowadays to own Bose stuff...... makes you feel like a newbie.....

Had a SR60 in my university days, now has the SR80. Frankly if you don't want isolation, I think open headphones like grado may be better... I am thinking of getting a pair of in-ears for flights. They say westone UM-2 is good. The shop at Causeway point seems to be very popular so that is where I will go.

but my entire family almost uses bose lifestyle systems.
for non audiophiles like us, i believe the compactness and neatness of it plays a lot.
though it may not sound as great as 100k speakers, but it's really good enough for home use.
pick up home n decor everymonth, you will almost certainly see a bose system in every newly renovated house next to the plasma tv.:bsmilie:
i may not know anything i admit but i really love my bose system.
so dont bash them ya!

Yeah, I got my Shure from there... great thing is that they actually let you try them out so you really know what will fit you best. Do give your ears abit of a cleaning though if you want to try those in-ear phones hahah...
my friend ever pass me a pair of inear headphones and the tip has yellowish digusting stuffs

Beware about using in-ear earphones on the aircraft, esp. those w/o in-line volume control as the volume level for the movies/music content is different from the PA system. If you are lucky, both will be balanced.
I almost had my ears busted on my flight while using them when the cabin crew spoke on the PA system.
The Shure model comes with the PTH, I think, so it shd be ok.

Push-To-Hear: It allows you to listen to ppl (eg. cabin crew asking if you like the fish or the chicken) w/o taking the earphones out of your ear after taking the effort to put it in just right.
But it's more than that; it also has the volume control and I think the automatic attenuation is built-in so that the sudden blast is control or minimized.
