Hi, my first post in the critique corner.

This picture is taken at sunset..the position of the sun is just right over the hill at the back of the picture. Picture is shot using Canon 20D + kit lens at 55mm, f5.6 and 1/500 sec.

I want to know whether the composition is just nice..or need a tighter crop of the 3 subjects. Also, whether it will look better in portrait or landscape?

My PS skill is still very basic..so would like C&C on how to make the colour better. I know the picture is underexposed.

thing is, your perspective not very good, a bit longer/closer would have been better, i think

i think it works well in portrait, but not sure if you really really must have so much oof grass in the foreground, a bit less would be great
i'm not sure if you like the sky being totally blown, to me, primarily landscape photographer perhaps so personal preference is always to leave a bit of sky behind but
suppose not very likely if in low light situation :dunno:

to bring out colour, just slight warming filter, the light here is very dull and grey
then go and experiment in LAB mode to bring out the colours, otherwise slight saturation overall would be fine, i guess

i think focus here also not very spot on, slight sharpening will help

Why do you need to build a horizon for this picture?

My theme is family bonding via sports. What i wanna create is the father is playing with his sons at weekend evening, which is prob the only time he's free. I had a talk with the father after they finished playing and found out that he just came back from overseas.

As for the horizon, the ground which i am standing on is actually abt 1m lower..and i don't wanna get too near to them. Will it be better if i crop it so that the foreground horizon will not be so prominent?

hmm..thanks for the advise..i will give colour adjustment a try in PS..

If that is the intended theme, i can't relate the picture with the theme.

First of all, i suggest that you attempt to use lesser sky on such composition. Compose the picture with the desired subject. Use techniques / DOF to present the theme.

not really, gnd would be fine, but you might have to sacrifice dof in order to capture the action, perhaps
