Alexandra hospital butterfly trail in bad shape

Dear All,

Its been a month since my last visited AHBT for some macro action. To my dissapointment, the place is in ruins. There are fallen branches all over the place, vines and bushes growing wild and the blue flowers that attracts the butterflies are all dead. I can't hardly spot any caterpillars or cocoons. The nursery shelters are bare and the butterflies are gone!!! :cry:

I only manage to spot a glassy tiger and some common five rings after some 15 mins walk around the compound of the hospital, and not at the trail itself. One of our Cser's even got attacked by something like 10 mossies last Saturday, so he fled the scene.

Its really sad to see the place go like this, as its a good training ground to beginners and pros alike. Anyone know who are the adopting firms? We really hope that the place can be revived, so that we can continue to enjoy shooting macros there.

Yes you can. :thumbsup: Just got an email from their CEO that AH would be glad that members of the public who have enjoyed the trail for photography and so on, are most welcome to organise a clean-up and to help maintain the trail. There isn't any organisation that has adopted the trail. It is maintained with very minimal funds and the gardeners at AH.

If you want to organise a voluntary clean-up, seek contributions of plants and get volunteers to help do some gardening, it would be great. I can PM you the contact at AH so that you can liaise with them.

You said it man. Upkeeping a garden is not cheap. Fortunately, because it is a butterfly trail, the plants are expected to get eaten up and needs time to regenerate before the next generation of butterflies can be seen at the site. Any volunteers who want to help, please PM scuderia and let him organise a group to volunteer their time to spruce up the trail.

to those who go there for shoots

Maybe you can tell us what is the role volunteer.
How much time is required per week? Timing?

go there and clean up the place

then got to think of ways to bring back the butterflies

after that, then discuss the next step of upkeep

I thought the butterfly trail was part of the hospital facilities and the idea was for patients to recuperate in nice surroundings. The photographers were just a byproduct of having a butterfly trail.

I recall that they had people tending to the garden and also taking care of the butterfly pupae etc.

If that has all gone because of some cost cutting measure to improve the bottomline then it is quite sad lor. Not that I am saying this is done but this neglect is clearly a sign of some funds not being assigned.

Now they are asking for volunteers.. what can volunteers do in the long term? Going there for an afternoon to clean up is fine but after that what happens? Are they going to inject more funds? What if equipment and expertise is needed. Someone needs to know how to bring the butterflies back and keep them there. This is not something anyone in the public will know how to do.

I am all for volunteering but I cannot see my time cleaning up there will be very useful if they are going to constantly rely on the public to upkeep the butterfly trail.


End up just go there and kill/feed mosquitoes.
