hi there. i'm using a sigma ex dc macro 2.8 18 55. what is the right F stop to use if i want to take a group pic inside a four room flat with a flash gun? Pics taken at 2.8 has slight softness at the edges. cheers

any f number that u see that is sharp lor...

cause no one will be at your location to see for u...no one will know the lighting also...

any apertures at either end will be soft. usually the sharpest aps are 8-11. you'll have to do your own testing to find the best for your lens

Or search for comprehensive tests.

Group foto gotta watch out for DOF, if too shallow, some people's face will be OOF. So ask the following questions to yourself:

How many people? Sitting/standing in row? Or can you estimate the distance between the persons nearest/farthest from the cam? How far are they from the cam, as in focus distant (this may vary if you take full or half body). With these info, find out the DOF you need, with a fixed focus distant and focal length, you can find out the aperture you need.

Check the DOF for the distance you'll be shooting them at. I would generally suggest a aperture of f5.6 to f8 for ease.

wah! shoot group photos using f2.8? what kind of effects you want to archive??

center sharp, corner soft?
front row in focus, back row OOF??
creamy background also including all the faces??
make everyone faces soft soft so don't need to touch up??

whatever it is, shooting group photo with f2.8 lens or a f4.5 lens, at least must using f5.6 and above, best is using f8 or f11 lar.
