Shoot RAW. Then??

Hi, I'm new to DSLR, would like to check with fellow forumers, what you do after you shoot RAW....

1) After loading all the pics do you convert all to jpeg/tiff?

2) Which a your preferred option of converting? To Jpeg or Tiff?

3) If you convert all your pics to any of the above, do you still keep the RAW copy or discard?

Appreciate if you could shield some light into what to do in the next step after shooting in RAW. Thank you

jpegs in SRGB, that is after i'm done adjusting the raw files..

i keep all my raw RAWs (pun intended =Pp) in a folder on my portable drive...

Keep all RAW on archive.

I will look thru via Adobe Bridge and choose those I want to edit. After editing, I will keep them together in the same folder.

Normally edit them to Jpeg, if I need to develope then I'll retain full size, else I'd just downsize to 800 x 600 format for web use.

after i shoot, i'll upload all my raw files to my computer. from here i'll go through them and pick out the ones i like and edit these in photoshop. then i'll save the final as a jpg.

Only those who appear good enough to be worth the effort. (Also, for "straight" conversions without much need for touch ups, it is easy enough to convert them on-the-fly when needed.)

If the file is for later processing, I would prefer a format like tiff. On the other hand, jpeg is very good at preserving the visible features of "finished" pictures.

I keep the raw. Raw converters are evolving, so I might get better results from the same file later. There's also some metadata that gets lost during conversion. If there are several versions of a photo around, it's easy to identify the original source if you have the raw file, too.

Ask yourself. What is your objective of the photos taken ? web gallery or print or do nothing ?
web gallery - recommend jpg
print - tiff
do nothing - no need to convert

Depend on your objective. Most people will convert to jpg.

Yes, RAW is the source.

Keep all the RAW files ? To me is NO. I only keep the RAW files which are nice and worth keeping.

i will omli edit and than covert the ones i want to jpeg
and i would choose jpef instead of tiff
and yeah i keep a back up of them in my ext hdd

edit the pics u want, then convert to either jpeg or tiff. basically jpeg is a compressed file type, but tiff is less compatible format (although now its quite flexible).
tiff pics are more high qual, but jpegs have generally smaller file sizes.
do keep the raw file, cos u can use it if u need to edit sth else, or convert to the file format u havent already done (i keep them in a 160gb photo hdd device)

although i normally dont shoot in raw. so if u arent that experienced, try keeping to jpeg first (and use jpeg fine)

i keep ALL my RAW files on an external HD. HD space is cheap these days.

when i edit the RAW files, i save the ones i want to share or nethost as jpeg (900x600). if i want to print, i save them as 16bit TIFF and edit in photoshop for as little loss as possible.

either way, very little is deleted unless the picture is totally blurred or +5 stops under or over exposed and u can't see anything.

Convert what I want to JPEG 4x6 inches and delete the raw files. Keep only those worth keeping. Using EOS400D and each rawfile is 10MB - will fill up hd pretty fast.

u will only get the final edited image, not the step of editing...

Everyone seems to be talking about using external storage. Why's that? Everyone using laptops and/or needing to port their pics all over the place? 'coz I use internal hdds, and they're generally more economical. Faster, too. (Ok, so I come from a gamer background and speed = important)

External storage is good for backup purposes. But "external" doesn't have to mean "hard disk". Anyway, economics are not really a big issue - I have a medium-sized hard disk by today's standards, partitioned between different operating systems, and yet I can keep several years of raw files on a single partition.

Well... internal HDD's draw valuable power and IDE space...

With externals, all you need is a free USB or Firewire port and a power plug.

I personally prefer DVDs

used to use DVDs, but now DVDs is not enough, i am considering getting HDD. =)
