Sometimes I could not get the effects I want using my cam. At the same time I am a newbie to PS. No wonder my pics look so ugly

Thinking to upgrade to DSLR now :lovegrin:

not too hurry to get a dslr , usually can spent by thousands , u must be ready , like our canon 40 friend . he started using olympus just upgrade not long have spent thousnads already . but if u r ready then u can go ahead . it because u will never get enough, like me waiting for the d300 to come out .

dun cry... every camera has its limitations... even the good DSLRs. learn the basics and when you figure it is time... then upgrade.

my guess is that when you take night shots, they don't come out right... the "effects" that you are looking for. i went through that frustration when i was shooting my first night event. almost pulled my hair out!

one of the big things about photography is lighting. know where are your light sources, and how much light and where the light comes from to get the shot. it is always a challenge to capture the picture as your eye see's it... because the brain is the most sophisticated processor of light... far superior than any 1DMkIII or D3 (did you know if you wear a pair of upside down glasses, which inverts what you see, your brain after sometime will turn your vision right side up?).

because there is a lack of light in night shots, using maximum zoom to take a shot would come up awful. either your flash is not powerful enough to reach (and using a flash is another monster to tame), your shutter is slow and your hand shakes, or your aperture is not big enough... so... try to move in closer to the subject. take the shot of up to 50mm (which is about 35mm for a 1.5/1.6 crop factor) and take note of the lighting.

when i started out, i liked to use my zoom to the full... paisey to come close to the subject... but i realized the limitations of doing that in low light situations, so i'm using more close up shots and noticing the lighting.

keep trying... and learning... and importantly... enjoy the process!

well i do not deny DSLR is the way to go but i started with a digital compact too though there are some shots that u cant do but make the best out of what u have as long as a have a manual mode u can do miricles

the impt thing is not to give up
learning new things keep the mind alive!!!!

Ok so who is keen to go chinatown on fri 21 sep

we will be meeting at 5pm to take some daylight shots
then wait for the night fall and the music starts..........

oh yah... one other thing about photography that i am learning... that is is not just about taking a picture. it also involves engaging the subject. sometimes, we got to talk to the subject, make them at ease, engage them... then can take close ups ;)

Friday 5PM? Wah, you guys don't need to work ah?

Will like to join but don't think can fork out the time...

5pm is too early for me. Even if i leave office at 6pm, the earliest i can get there is around 7pm.

Thanks very much for the advices ;p I will take more practice and use my brain to overcome the limitations of my equipment.

I want to join this event in case I don't need to work OT :dunno: oso I must be late bcoz I could not leave so early :dunno:

want to join but .............anyway enjoy your shoot guys , as some of us are preparing for a wedding shoot this sunday .

would like to join too... but like harishsegar, even leave at 6 from work, also reach ard 7...

pangfat, no rush in changing equipment. i was using the Canon S40, learnt from it and upgraded to a Nikon D50. Spent quite alot on it. Ultimately realise i'm still not there yet, downgraded to my current FZ50. Learning the ways from my FZ50 now.

think 7 is ok la, but fri have auditors coming on that day, duno can leave on time or not.:dunno:

How infusia?? Going or not?

i should be able to make it if 7pm at chinatown...
but having to lug the tripod to work...
