Discriminations?

I guess i have no choice but to post this matter here.

I'm new to digital photography and it has become a passion throughout the experience. Recently i encounter something ugly and i think it's a disgrace to the world of photography.

Here's the situation. Recently i went for a walkabout over at Geylang (to catch and experience the fasting month atmosphere) to do some street photography. I bumped into a group of photographers and decide to make friends with them. I started talking to them and their 1st impression is what saddens me. They look at me in arrogance and they continue talking among themselves. I get their 'signals' and walk away. But that's not the point i post this thread.

I start taking photos and they were just a few feet away. They look at me and laugh. I thought they started to lighten up but they were laughing about my equipment (i'm using a 300D). I check and examine my camera if there's something wrong with it. But before i could examine, i overheard them talking, "that guy is so outdated. he thinks he can take good pictures with that crap? we're glad we're equip with this (they're using 40D, D200 and some L lens". I was disheartened.

That doesn't dimoralize me because i know "photography is not about equipment, it's the person behind it" or that saying is gone? What saddens me is that there is some photographers out there think it's all about the equipment.

Happens.. Just ignore them. Anyone who knows well about photography can take better shots than them.

they probably aren't photographers to begin with.

good cameras make good photographers? i think that logic is kinda warped. even a pns camera can make a dslr look bad if the person behind the lens knows how to shoot.

Why bother with such people? If they are really reading this (probably are), point them here. They are unprocessed pictures, straight out of a junk toy even more outdated then your 300D.

Don't worry about what you encountered, as most of such folks probably cannot shoot much worth a dime. Focus on what you enjoy and forget about them. Or join outings that deter such equipment wankers (like my AG Outings), and make like-minded friends.

Don't be affected by them. Let your passion overpower their brainless comments.

Just ignore them and accept that they are just boys, young and immature. Like someone said, they may not be photographers to begin with, cause a photographer will knows that it's not about the equipment, it's about the man behind the camera.

I always encounter this situation,

one camera---so pro
one models shoot---expert pro
one critique----so called pro expert.

whatever it is , empty vessels make the most noise. Just ignore them.

Haha. I wonder what will they say if I take my EOS 5 out for a shoot. Just don't worry about the silly comments that these guys made. I have a friend who is very good in photography, but uses a D80. Not top in the line, but good enough to take good pictures.

I know that feeling - especially when you're alone and the others are in a 'gang'. There is this condescending attitude towards any outsider who is 'less well-equipped'.

I recently took my old F601 (for those who still remember this Nikon old horse SLR) and a Vivitar Series 1 19-35mm lens out for a test run, as I wanted to make sure it still works before I lend it to a colleague who did not have an SLR. I also met a few photographers at SBG, but the outcome was quite different from your experience. Though they were sporting the latest pro-DSLRs and L lenses, they saw what I was using, and invited me to join them in shooting some scenery at the Eco Lake.

Not all 'photographers' are like those that you've met. There are definitely nice ones around.

relies on the big tag of 40d, d200, d300 and all that jazz to make his photos seem better to himself
why care
a good photographer will produce good **** with a old 3 megapixel P&S
give a donkey any pro camera, 39 mgp, can shoot iso 51200, maximum shutter speed godlike, etc
best lens
donkey still produce donkey pictures

why should you be affected by them, is the problem
overcome yourself
and concentrate more on shooting, that is the key to proving them wrong in the first place
instead of being disturbed by less intelligent life form's comments

Actually there is no need to prove them wrong. There is nothing to prove really.

But ya, why worry about them? Feeling disheartened over their comments don't make you a better photographer. Put them aside. And shoot more. I know of 1 photographer who uses a better camera than you, but shoot crappy pictures. ME!!! haha.

The best photographer in the world still perfer to use film camera..... anyone dare say this Pros are out of date ??
