Question about Depth of field photography

Hi all, would like to ask some question about DOF photography.

(1) Background blur and foreground blur, which is better? or is it depends on situation, if thats the case, what are the situation that suits background blur / foreground blur?

(2) Does anyone know where I can read more about DOF?

(3) If I want to acheive background blur, all I need to do is to choose the smallest f-stop, the distance of the camera to the main object is shorter than the background, then background blur will be acheive? or there is more to it?

(4) I have read from this url ( http://www.clubsnap.org/display.php?file=articles/fireworks/fireworks.htm ) is there similar url for DOF photography? or is there some olther topic where I can read from it?

1. Depends on what you want to focus on, and what you want to emphasize. Is apple or orange better? Bg bokeh forms better almost all of the time.

2. Search google.. I'm sure there alot more to read about DOF..

3. Yea. The zoom factor affects the bokeh too.

Photography is both a science and an art. The science parts helps you understand how to create a certain kind of picture by using what f-number, how much zoom or wide angle, etc.

The art part of photography is to create a picture that speaks a million words! some pictures are better with foreground blur, some are better with background blur, some are better with both foreground and background blur, and some are better when they are all clear

Experiment with different kinds of shots, know how to create each kind of shot, then let your creativity take over

DOF is the area in front and behind your subject that is in focus. So you cannot define your background to be blur and your foregrounf to be sharp if both fore and background are same distance from your subject.

Why background blur ?
- Make the object more 3D, pop out of the screen
- Isolate the object to the background
- need Big Aperture lens likes portrait lens to get shallow DOF

Usually we don't say smallest f-stop, correct terms are
- shallow DOF
- big aperture
- Fast lens
If background is near to object, then background blur is not obvious.
