hi all, i've got this problem with lightroom and i wanted to know if anybody has experienced it too. whenever i zoom in on a picture to view or to develop, the program will remove a lot of the saturation and red while the word "working" is shown. is this some kind of auto-edit function? does anybody know how to turn it off?

you work with RAW files, correct?
the initial preview you see in LR is based on the embedded jpeg, which has corrections as per in camera settings... once you zoom in a 1:1 preview is generated from the RAW data, some of the in-camera settings cannot be read by LR and a duller image appears...

The whole problems stems form the issue that the big camera companies are not revealing how to read their RAW data.... Adobe for example is getting cameras, shoots known colour targets with the camera in RAW and then tries to back engineer the colours....

not much you can do about except for shooting jpeg...
or creating a preset that contains contrast and saturation settings closer to in-camera settings

so how do i create this preset and how do i get it to automatically apply to all photos that are imported into lightroom?

take a typical shot, then go develop module, make adjustments to it such as tone curve/saturation/vibrance (you could also use camera calibration), then create a new preset (presets are on the left panel)
when you import photos you can apply this preset on import...
you can also download presets from http://www.inside-lightroom.com/ which may be helpful to achieve what you want
